Matthew McConaughey may not be acting when he says he’s interested in a run for Texas governor.
The Oscar-winning star of “Dallas Buyers Club” has been making calls to a club of elite politically-connected Texans to talk about getting into the 2022 gubernatorial race, Politico reported Sunday, citing sources.
McConaughey has been talking to “deep-pocketed” moderate Republicans and business leaders in the Lone Star State to gauge their support, Politico said.
The 51-year-old actor would have to get through Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is planning to seek re-election next year and is already facing a likely primary challenge from Sen. Don Huffines. No Democrat has announced a run yet.
There’s speculation “The Lincoln Lawyer” might not run as a candidate in the party of Lincoln. There’s speculation he could dive into politics as a Democrat or independent, according to Politico.
McConaughey, an Austin resident, has been saying in interviews for months that he was considering a run.

Multiple candidates can run for governor.
And he’s making a play for Republican votes but does not seem to be a Republican.
And it seems that moderate Republicans don’t find Abbott to be moderate enough but he isn’t conservative enough for some conservatives.
McConaughey’s support of gun control would tank him with Republicans and some Democrats.
When was the last time any question mark turned out to be a pleasantly conservative surprise?
McConaughey is not conservative. He tries to portray himself as middle of the road. He’s not. He is a liberal. I don’t think he would win governor in Texas.
All I can figure is that acting must be alot like politics...
Alright Alright Alright!
Perhaps not.
Should tag with Rino alert. He just wants to flip the state blue forever, like Arnold did to California.
Given that 99% of those in showbiz today are filthy, amoral scum I’m willing to assume he is too. And the fact that he’s being written up in this Maoist rag tends to confirm his amorality.
You, nor anyone else.
Since he hasn't been up front with his views, he is suspect, at best.
If he were running to the right of Abbott, I think we would know it.
He is a good actor, but so was alex bladwin.
He’s led anti-gun protests. I went to high school with him in Longview. He’s a liberal.
I think you can look at an actor’s collective work and see if an actor turned down roles or movie scenes which would have jeopardized his/her moral compass. Jim Caviezel refused to do a scene with Jennifer Lopez in which she would have been nude.
I don’t think McConauhey has those kinds of guts.
He also, apparently, treats folks who work on the biz on set like crap and could care less about their well being. I have a friend who works in the biz. She’s black. She gets treated with utter disrespect because Hollywood actors think and live as little despots.
I don’t think he’s a “rare” actor who has anyone’s best interest at heart. I also don’t think he’s very bright.
Texas is not ready for another flat out liberal governor just yet IMO no matter how affable he seems. Texas might warm up to Libertarian Lt Governor Patrick though who is often more liberal than conservative.
An old friend I met in OH back in the day was active in Massachuetts politics until he realized a long long time ago that the State was moving so left so fast, he and his family left.
* The trick they did in MA and CT was this.
* Run a middle of the road "R" in today's parlance a RINO.
* In reality, they are a Dem in an "R" suit.
* It divide's the Republican Party, turns off their voter base, and they stay home instead of voting for the evil of 2 lessers.
* The "D" candidate wins, and the Republican Party gets hollowed out.
They are trying the same $h!+ in TX with this guy.
He's the perfect Decepticon how many women will vote for him just because he is handsome, and insert a plethora of other reasons and subgroups to do so, and all the "new" residents in TX that want to remake it into the Socialist craphole they left.
Talking to deep pocketed “moderate” Republicans huh?
Aka RINOS.
A great big NO.
I guess they can have their fun getting media attention, but the outcome will still be the same, which is that no one’s replacing Abbott in Texas, until Abbott decides to no longer run.
” Texas might warm up to Libertarian Lt Governor Patrick though who is often more liberal than conservative.”
I really, really liked him - until Constitutional Carry. 20 states have it, no bloodbaths in those 20 states, but we’re still hearing arguments that Texas will have a bloodbath if TEXAS passes it.
And Patrick is stalling it, and may kill it here, based on that BS reasoning. He stepped in it on this one and it will likely end his rise in politics.
The old saying is that “politics is acting for ugly people”.
Hollywood Beta Boy.
Just Remember how that worked out for Kinky Friedman.
LOL, ya think? I hope he doesn't. It would be "Women for Beto" all over again.
