Brentwood said “no more” this week to an oil and natural gas pipeline that has operated in the city’s southwestern region for the past 30 years.
In a move that surprised city staff, who had included the item on the consent calendar, which is usually for items with no discussion, the City Council opted not to renew a franchise for California Resources Production Corp. to use its pipeline. The transmission line runs in the city along Balfour Road, John Muir Parkway and Concord Avenue and is part of a larger system that begins in San Joaquin County and extends to a refinery in Richmond.
The city first granted Unocal a 25-year pipeline franchise in 1991, giving the company the right to build, operate and maintain a pipeline to convey oil and gas within the city limits. Since then, the pipeline was sold several times, and in 2017, the new owner, California Resources Production Corp., was granted the rights, for which they recently requested a 10-year extension as the current one was expiring.
Council members and residents, had many questions concerning safety of the pipeline that flows 1.8 million cubic feet of natural gas daily through the city, including near several subdivisions, which were not built at the time the pipeline was constructed.
...“Every home in Brentwood receives natural gas, right?” he said. “I understand there are some risks, but I don’t think natural gas is going away and having these conveyances is important to every resident. So that is something to consider.”
Reached later, Ogden said the city will work with California Resources Production this week to consider its next steps and begin shutting down the pipeline operations.
“City staff is just beginning to assess the possible unintended consequences of it locally and to the region,” he added.

This is a good way to destroy home values for those who aren’t able to convert from gas to electricity. In other words, it’s a tax on the poor.
It may also be a bid to destroy home values to make them easier to buy up.
Just wow.
Going to cost residents millions to convert.
Very short sighted.
Makes “0” sense. We’re missing a piece.
Mean spiteful cockroaches who are not getting enough in “vigorish” payments to buy their agreement to look the other way. Colonial Pipeline could only get back on line after they made a payment in bitcoin to the hackers that shut them down.
Pipelines for natural gas and petroleum are easy targets for the larcenous.
Sidewalks!
A car sometimes jumps the curb and kills or injures pedestrians in sidewalks.
All sidewalk must be banned to present them getting killed of injured in sidewalks.
Let’s go through the threat of bathtubs....
Have any of these morons thought about what happens to this pipeline after they shut it down?
Insanity. Pure insanity. A city council full of Green extremists, perhaps?

Maybe not. Conservatives think things through. But liberals are like small, impulsive children. They will do whatever feels good at that moment. What might happen a year later (or even a day later) does not concern them.
SHAKEDOWN!
Not just the homes in that area. It is part of a larger system!
For those making comments about it being expensive to convert to electricity, I do believe they can convert to propane, the only problem is getting those big propane tanks into the back yard if the houses are built to close to each other, I’m not sure how they move those big tanks around though, maybe they might have special equipment to move them around in tight spaces.
The typical liberal can’t think 12 hours ahead.
I’ve long believed that the billionaires and globalists have been wanting California for themselves,as their own fiefdom
Stupid is, is stupid does.
Their own citizens use this gas, it is not just a "pass through" pipe for other cities.
Do they have a plan to convert all appliances, furnaces, stoves etc. to electric {or wind/solar power}?
That was a rhetorical question, of course they don't.
To convert to propane you also have to change the jet size of all your natural gas fired appliances.
Shut it off tomorrow. Let them cook over wood fires in their living rooms.

Don’t feel sorry for affected locals if they won’t ditch their apathy and protest this.
