Can I ask a stupid question?
Why are the operations of this pipeline subject to a cyber attack? The pipeline was constructed long before the internet existed. Why are the operations apparently somehow on the internet?
I’m not a high tech guy so maybe there is good reason for the operations of the pipeline to be on the internet. Then that also begs questions of internet security.

Because people put EVERYTHING on the internet these days even coffee makers.

Because, Dunning-Kruger, you’re making the same stupid assumption everyone else is, that the PIPELINE HARDWARE was attacked, and instead, it is the FRONT OFFICE ‘computers’ that are responsible for dispatching the quantities ordered/scheduled AND the associated billing that were attacked ...
Oh, but I'm sure with the full resources of the Bite-me administration on this they'll get these folks back up much sooner . . .
