U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Sunday said the federal government is working to avoid supply disruptions after Colonial Pipeline, the operator of the country’s largest fuel pipeline, temporarily suspended all operations due to a ransomware attack on Friday.
“This is what businesses now have to worry about,” Raimondo said during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “Unfortunately, these sorts of attacks are becoming more frequent. They’re here to stay.”
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the ransomware attack and the F.B.I. said it’s working closely with Colonial Pipeline and government partners to address the situation.
The Department of Energy is monitoring potential impacts to fuel supply and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is coordinating with the company.
Colonial Pipeline said it learned Friday that it “was the victim of a cybersecurity attack” and has since shut down 5,500 miles of pipeline that carry nearly half of the fuel supplies on the East Coast, raising fears of spot shortages of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

As for the pipeline operator, you can do better. Control of equipment has to be local, by operations staff. Nothing should be accessible from the Internet. Just like voting machines. Dumb islands of information is the only way to ensure safety. Do you want hackers suddenly controlling an airline flight from their basement? No, because the airliner is isolated from the internet.

Such was the way it used to work.
In today’s world the refineries putting product into the pipelines tanks want to be connected via the internet to the pipeline. And the customers taking product from the pipeline’s tanks also want to be connected via the internet.
Just-in-time inventory management works great so long as the bad guys don’t sneak into the computer system and raise hell.
Looks like the ‘anti-hacker’ computer companies will have a great second quarter fixing Colonial’s current problem as well as other distribution systems with similar vulnerabilities.

I am not so sure of that, I saw the pilot episode of “The lone gunmen”
the one where they were able to keep an airliner from hitting the World Trade center by using a stolen Octium 4 processor and remotely connecting to the plane.
Besides there is a big push for devices that can be remote controlled, Drones, Cars, Robots, Combines, and yes even voting machines..

Imagine if this cyberattack just "happened" to cause so much of a fuel shortage that east coast/blue state folks had to stay put for Memorial Day.
Imagine how that would help to "flatten the curve"--"safer at home".
