U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Sunday said the federal government is working to avoid supply disruptions after Colonial Pipeline, the operator of the country’s largest fuel pipeline, temporarily suspended all operations due to a ransomware attack on Friday.
“This is what businesses now have to worry about,” Raimondo said during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “Unfortunately, these sorts of attacks are becoming more frequent. They’re here to stay.”
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the ransomware attack and the F.B.I. said it’s working closely with Colonial Pipeline and government partners to address the situation.
The Department of Energy is monitoring potential impacts to fuel supply and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is coordinating with the company.
Colonial Pipeline said it learned Friday that it “was the victim of a cybersecurity attack” and has since shut down 5,500 miles of pipeline that carry nearly half of the fuel supplies on the East Coast, raising fears of spot shortages of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

Honestly the only thing surprising about this is that it took so long to happen.
It is highly likely this is the same organized ransomware group that has hit hospitals and 100s of other Corps. It is also likely that when the Ransom is paid their files will be decrypted.
Imagine if a malicious state actor was actually purposely targeting our infrastructure.
How about a Nuke plant? if someone can do it to the Iranians systems that were designed to be secure, don't think for a second that our unsecure systems are not already compromised
No BiXiden voter should be allowed to buy Gasoline or Diesel until they cry “Uncle” and submit a sworn affidavit that the election was stolen.
I thought that the DOE under BiXiden was committed to shutting down all pipelines.
I don’t trust or believe anything they say or do.
She is part of an illegitimate “administration” that used election fraud and other totalitarian means to usurp power.
Just like they created sanctuary states we need to create a sanctuary country outside of Washington DC.
The only one shutting down US Pipelines is Biden
I agree I am surprised it took so long to happen as well.
I had hope companies were prepared for such attacks; leftists have talked about it for years and given their hostility to building new piplines, it was only a matter of time before they attacked existing lines. Another reason for more than one means to provide for heat, hot water, cooking, and so forth.
Yet another Big Lie from this illegal administration. Raimondo wasn’t even allowed at the final meeting last week where Xiden’s puppet masters decided to shred 150 years of US intellectual property law (agreeing to give away vaccine and other patents, copyrights and trademarks at the WTO because “America is back”). This particular CommSec has no meaningful role in the illegal administration.
this replaces the annual
springtime refinery fire
Is it not amazing that since January 20 every major crisis er event has either jeopardized our security and or fuel supply?
Remember. “never let a crisis go to waste”?
Remember the temperary shutdown?
Methinks these events or crisis-es are designed to instill fear and fear will allow even more control.
I'm gonna say this was a state actor sending a message to Former Vice President Biden and Co. If I was a betting man, I'd say China in preparation to action on Taiwan.
Exactly, the cyberattack came from within the government.
This could get ugly fast.

What a coincidence!
Excerpt from Marketwatch article:
“Experts said that gasoline prices are unlikely to be affected if the pipeline is back to normal in the next few days but that the incident — the worst cyberattack to date on critical U.S. infrastructure — should serve as a wake-up call to companies about the vulnerabilities they face.
The pipeline, operated by Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline, carries gasoline and other fuel from Texas to the Northeast. It delivers roughly 45% of fuel consumed on the East Coast, according to the company.
It was hit by what Colonial called a ransomware attack, in which hackers typically lock up computer systems by encrypting data and then demand a large ransom to release it. The company has not said what was demanded or who made the demand.
However, the person close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the culprit as DarkSide. It is among ransomware gangs that have “professionalized” a criminal industry that has cost Western nations tens of billions of dollars in losses in the past three years.”
“I am glad the people from the Government are there to help.”
BOHICA!!!
Are any FReepers on the East Coast north of Atlanta seeing any lines at gasoline stations?
In any event it might be wise to ‘top off’ the tank just in case the shutdown lingers.
Perhaps if the FBI worried more about cyber attacks than some clown wearing horns who put up a picture of a naken black man in the Capitol Dome, the Northeast wouldn’t be looking at gas lines tomorrow.
People in the northeast don’t drive gasoline cars any more. They will be fine in their electrics.
One can wounder, did China do this? Iran? the CIA? Justice Department?
Bingo! Insightful post of the day!
It seems pretty clear that it was the same criminal syndicate that has done many other identical attacks.
but almost any state actor is capable of doing similar things.
in fact Any bad actor with sufficient money and motivation could do it.
Soon there will be AI things which will be able to do this.
I only watched a few episodes of the newer Battlestar Galactica but the one commander had the right idea.
