Pro-independence parties won a majority in Scotland’s parliament on Saturday, paving the way to a high-stakes political, legal and constitutional battle with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the future of the United Kingdom.
Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the result meant she would push ahead with plans for a second independence referendum once the COVID-19 pandemic was over, adding that it would be absurd and outrageous if Johnson were to try to ignore the democratic will of the people.
"There is simply no democratic justification whatsoever for Boris Johnson, or indeed for anyone else, seeking to block the right of the people of Scotland to choose our own future," Sturgeon said.
"It is the will of the country," she added after her Scottish National Party (SNP) was returned for a fourth consecutive term in office.

FREEDOM!
England is the greatest beneficiary of Scottish independence.
The amount of welfare money sent to the Scots is staggering.
Good riddance.
I certainly do not have any expertise on the UK, but I have read that Scotland is a net financial drain on England. Getting rid of Scotland may benefit England like getting rid of Cook county and Chicago with their financial liabilities could benefit the rest of Illinois. That could be wrong but we may find out.
Nicola Sturgeon seems to be personally obsessed with the independence issue
... but is it good for Scotland?
Will they still be the UNITED Kingdom?
Na, she wants to be a Slave of the EU
United Wiltshire
The Scots have a secret place to get unlimited OPM?
Everyone KNOWS that the Scots are the worst tennis players in the world...
As long as they keep making Laphroaig I don’t give a damn.
The scots keep threatening to leave, but don’t,.
Maybe we could arrange a swap!
Does this mean I should buy that one square foot of Scottish highland property and declare myself a Laird?
The most interesting info I get on anything having to do with the UK, Canada, or anything else British comes from my Brit neighbor-she keeps up with all things British-even the royal; family scandals-goes to GB to visit every couple of years. and has a sister in Alberta, Canada-she has told me many times that Scotland today is practically a dependent state of GB-lots of people living on the dole, etc-she doesn’t think Scotland of today could exist independently for more than a few years-the Scotland we read about in history books and admired in movies like Braveheart apparently no longer exists...
Exactly. They’re pissed about Brexit and want back into the EU very badly.
There’s no certainty an independent Scotland would be allowed in to the EU.
Be careful what you ask for laddies!
Bingo. Also, UK would have to make arrangements for HMN boomers (ICBM subs) based up in Scotland.
Of course they would. The EU wants to show up the stupid Brits for walking away from them and will absolutely take Scotland and Norther Ireland when they split from England.
That should make everyone happy. The troglodyte Nigel Farage who was only doing this because he would never get elected in the UK can now be a big fish in the tiny little post-post-colonial little ditch that will be left of the UK. Of course he still has the leadership abilities of a tub of jello so the dumb as rocks, backstabbing Boris Johnson can continue to be prime minister for life (all while mightily protesting the separation).
UK has been on a rapid path to being third world country for decades now, and with this everyone else in the world can have the satisfaction of watching these idiots hoisted on their own petard and quickly fade into irrelevance as a world power in anything except making curry.Fun times..
I have a friend who did just that.
