Flood Legends from the Americas, Part 1: Continental United States

by Nick Liguori on April 13, 2021

Do you know who the original inhabitants of the United States were? They are known as the First Nations peoples, and they include many tribes spread across this vast land—including the Cherokee, Navajo, Lakota, Delaware, Spokane, Apache, and so many more tribes.

Did you know that all of these tribes had historical traditions describing the great flood recorded in Genesis? Remarkably, traditions of this global flood have been among over 120 tribes from the continental United States—to say nothing of the rest of the world! Almost every tribe of which we have real historical data has a memory of the great flood.

The region now covering states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho were subject to repeated periods of massive flooding during interglacial warming episodes. Eastern Washington especially was shaped by floods hundreds of feet deep, most recently at the end of the last ice age 13000 years ago. It would not be surprising to find the descendants of early Clovis people, eg, to have archaic remnant memories of these floods preserved as myth.

There were mega floods that occurred under the ice sheets, as I understand it. Eastern Washington flooded and was washed through the Columbia gorge, to the ocean. Much of the Willamette Valley was filled with the effluvia of these floods. Biblical? Doubtful.

How could they have remembered the Noachian flood, which killed everyone except for Noah’s family?

Because the Flood, also recorded in Greek and Roman mythology, was probably the melting of the ice sheets left by the last Great Ice Age.

Actually, there was a comet/asteroid that hit the middle of Canada. The impact and subsequent heat started a deluge that brought about the abrupt end of the last ice age.

This deluge ripped the center of the US. It scrubbed the earth down to bedrock. Anyone who has flown over the continental US has seen this from the air.

It also wiped clean the surface of any previous civilizations—the remains of which can be found east of the Mississippi basin.

Was it the Genesis flood, brought on by God? I guess if God is directing asteroids, I could go with that.

There are flood legends in just about every culture. Genesis is just the one most Americans know.

“How could they have remembered the Noachian flood, which killed everyone except for Noah’s family?”

(Step 1) Noah and flood

(Step 2) Noah’s descendants build Babel tower

(Step 3) God confuses the unified language at the tower into many different tongues.

(Step 4) Multiple ethnic groups are created overnight.

(Step 5) These then spread across the globe, each carrying knowledge of the flood to their new homes.

Actually, there was a comet/asteroid that hit the middle of Canada

This hypothesis emerged in the late seventeenth century. Although it later fell out of favor, it has been revived by scholars early in this century.
