Former President Trump on Wednesday offered his support to Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) should there be an opening in House GOP leadership.
Trump and Stefanik spoke Wednesday morning, a source close to the president confirmed. The conversation comes as Stefanik consolidates support to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as chair of the House Republican Conference should Cheney step down or be voted out.
The endorsement was first reported by Punchbowl News.
ADVERTISEMENT Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), along with many rank-and-file Republicans, are moving to oust Cheney for continuing to speak out against Trump for his false claims the 2020 election was stolen and his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Stefanik is extremely close with McCarthy; Scalise endorsed Stefanik for the No. 3 leadership job on Wednesday. A closed-door, secret-ballot vote to remove Cheney from leadership could come as soon as next week.

She voted against Trump on the Border Wall at least 3 times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The wall would be finished by now had it not been for GOP obstruction.
She is just another Bush League Republican.
We will never Make America Great Again by re-electing Assistant Democrats.
Definitely better.
Someone needs to put a bug in Trump’s ear re MTG instead of Stefanik. He does have a loyalty thing, though, and Elise was a hero for him during impeachment. It’s a tough one.
No one is perfect, she'll do just fine. It's great that Cheney is gone.
Cheney stuck her neck out to trash Trump and she will pay the price.
But you are absolutely right so if we want a more conservative Republican Party, this is not a step in that direction.
This is just WWE for politics a show that feeds the rage of people angry with Cheney the RINO but doesn’t change anything.
Trump is in with RINO’s and was from the beginning RINO’s like former Congressman Peter King and the list goes on.
I support Trump as a “Wild Card” but don’t see him as a Conservative.
So is she a born again conservative or is she faking it well?
On the other hand, why not go with someone like Jackie Walorski
“Elise Stefanik has one of the most liberal voting records of any GOP in Congress (#6 to be exact) — any Republican promulgating her ascent to leadership is either not conservative or grossly misinformed.”
But, but, but “Trump”...
Y'all are deeply delusional. She is one of the most liberal republicans in congress, and a new yorker. She is actually worse than Cheney on policy. She has had one nice moment defending Trump, but this is a disaster. Put someone from the freedom caucus in leadership. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...
Isn't Project 538 the website that gave Trump a one in ten chance pf legitimately winning the election?
“This is great because now slow moving McCarthy needs to move forward to the hue and cries that Trump is running the show!”
I disagree. I suspect that Kevin McCarthy and others told Trump that Stefanik is their choice and that she will be approved by the House members. Period.
This is similar to Mitch McConnell telling Trump which judges can be confirmed and which ones cannot. The legislative leaders hold all of the cards.
She’s OK, but just OK.
She is global warming type. Voted for us to stay in the Paris agreement, to stop oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and opposed Trump in killing Obamacare. She also opposed Trump on pulling out of Syria saying “I am deeply opposed to the Administration’s decision”.
Let’s not pretend she is a solid conservative. We can do better. She’s just adequate and being picked because of her sex.
If Stefanik is who they are pushing, McCarthy needs to go too. Especially after things with him and Luntz were revealed. Also he claims Jan 6th was an insurrection, and that the election wasn’t stolen.
Now he replacing Cheney with someone with a worse voting record.
This is crap.
The Republicans haven’t learned a thing. This is a big finger to conservatives.
sigh.
Does it matter if it shows how she voted ?
She's nowhere near perfect, but I think she's a great improvement over Cheney - it sends a signal to those that would want to stab Trump in the future.
It really is all about sending a strong message.
If I were a betting man, I'd put money on Cheney leaving the party for the democrats.
YES!
It is time for us to do a deep cleaning of our house
