Trump backs Stefanik to replace Cheney
The Hill ^ | 05/05/2021 | Brett Samuels and Scott Wong

Posted on 05/05/2021 8:26:46 AM PDT by GIdget2004

Former President Trump on Wednesday offered his support to Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) should there be an opening in House GOP leadership.

Trump and Stefanik spoke Wednesday morning, a source close to the president confirmed. The conversation comes as Stefanik consolidates support to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as chair of the House Republican Conference should Cheney step down or be voted out.

The endorsement was first reported by Punchbowl News.

ADVERTISEMENT Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), along with many rank-and-file Republicans, are moving to oust Cheney for continuing to speak out against Trump for his false claims the 2020 election was stolen and his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Stefanik is extremely close with McCarthy; Scalise endorsed Stefanik for the No. 3 leadership job on Wednesday. A closed-door, secret-ballot vote to remove Cheney from leadership could come as soon as next week.

This is great because now slow moving McCarthy needs to move forward to the hue and cries that Trump is running the show!

The GOP are cowards. The vote should be open and on the record. They are so clueless. The heart of the reason for removing Cheney is her steadfast denial of voter fraud and her opposition to Trump. Yet the GOP will have their vote in secret.

This is a done deal. The only thing left is the actual votes. Jim Jordan says he’s on board and this will happen, overdue, but at least it’s happening.

A wise endorsement, since Elise is toying with a Cuomo challenge, which no R is likely to win.

This appointment to leadership would entice her to stay in Congress where she would have more influence than as a defeated gubernatorial candidate.

Good move, DJT.

Elise Stefanik is a moderate. Do your research.

The Republican party will never be reformed if they’re being led by moderates/RINOs.

She voted for Overturning President Trump’s emergency declaration for border wall funding.

She’s very good. If she turns on him she’ll find out quick, like all the other GOP hopefuls, how many Americans love Trump

CORRECT. I have wonder, as being stated by an anonymous source, that Trump supports Stefanik because she is the only alternative being offered to replace Cheney. If I were to have to choose between Cheney or Stefanik, it would be a no brainer. But I certainly wouldn't be saying much positive of about Stefanik. I'll damn Cheney 24/7. I'd keep my mouth shut about Stefanik and seek better alternatives. It seems no one has the courage to be that alternative. That is truly worrisome.

“She is a GREAT choice!”

This is not good. She’s a female version of Dan Crenshaw (R-TX).

Elise Stefanik is a moderate. Do your research.

She's from upstate NY where even there the GOP is moderate given there is no state GOP committee to help them win elections. The seat just to the South is the one air head Kristen Gillibrand stole from John Sweeney as the Dems running the state released confidential reports to smear him the day before the election. The fact that any Republicans win in NY with the collapse of the state GOP party is a miracle.

I guess it’ll have to be a FEMALE RINO. Nothing else will do now.

Just because a moderate Republican is the best that can be elected in that district, why is it a reason to put a moderate Republican in a leadership position? There are far more conservative women in the Republican House caucus than Stefanik.

Instead the GOPe get Trump to endorse another establishment Republican for leadership.
