Ping. A new floor is overdue. Now they can bring gladiators back. Lions too.

WHY?

See the very end there in the pic? A piece of floor. Go there, if you want to see.

Sounds like a huge waste of scarce resources when there is so much needing attention/restoration/preservation.

[It might also be helpful to wait for a huge influx of tourist $$’s]

Being able to see the “basement” was a highlight of our visit to the Colosseum. The visit would have been diminished if it had been covered up. Perhaps this is meant as a way of increasing the number of people who pay for guided tours of the inner spaces.

Do tourists still go to Rome?

I have read that they had a way to flood the arena and stage small naval battles. Wonder how they kept the water out of the underground tunnels.

They should convert the floor into a huge trampoline, charge folks to use it.

Monument to human art and ingenuity?
Monument to human bloodthirsty curiosity and pleasure is more like it. And what we’ll invent to satiate it.

As well as apparently having some kind of retractable roof, the Colosseum at one time could be flooded for naval battle reenactments.

That’d make one heckuva plastic ball pit for the kiddies.

They shouldn't do it in wood. They should do it in plexiglass, like the grand canyon walkway

I would think that they will only cover maybe half of the floor, to allow visitors to see the gladiator cells below.

Too bad all most all of the marble facades and half the structure were taken to build Medieval and Renaissance structures. The original building must have been spectacular, though its purpose was so dark. Not sure how many people died in the Flavian Amphitheater, but it was a very large number.
