Susan Collins 'appalled' by booing and censure vote of Mitt Romney

Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins was "appalled" by the Utah GOP's censure vote on Saturday of Sen. Mitt Romney, who was met by a chorus of boos when he took the stage.

Utah Republicans voted 798-711 to defeat the censure resolution toward the end of the party's meeting. Romney moved to "remove Trump from office in two illegitimate impeachment trials," which "hurt the constitution and hurt the party," said Davis County Del. Don Guymon, who wrote the resolution.

Collins defended Romney on Sunday and said the party should not be helmed by "one person," potentially referring to former President Donald Trump.

“I was appalled," Collins told CNN's Jake Tapper of the censure vote and jeering. "Mitt Romney is an outstanding senator who serves his state and our country well."

She continued: "We Republicans need to remember that we are united by fundamental principles such as belief in personal responsibility, individual freedom, opportunity, free markets, a strong national defense. Those are the principles that unite us. We are not a party that is just led by one person. There are many prominent, upcoming, younger men and women in our party who hold great promise for leading us."

Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, a Trump critic, was another prominent Republican who faced backlash from her party after she was seen elbow-bumping President Joe Biden ahead of his first congressional address Wednesday.

Collins backed Cheney, who told her colleagues that she and Biden are not "sworn enemies."

"Liz Cheney is a woman of strength and conscience, and she did what she thought was right, and I salute her for that," Collins said. "We need to be accepting of differences in our party. We don’t want to become like too much of the Democratic Party, which has been taken over by the progressive left."

Susan Collins is apalled by the boos and censure of Mitt Romney because she knows who is next for her bad behaviour. She votes like a democrat to appear to be bipartisan but it is really silly to block some of her own party’s objetives to do so.

Romney, Collins, MurCowSki, Cheney, et. al., You are being loudly rejected because you share common attributes. You are weak. You don’t get the job done. You do not have the same values as the people who vote. You fail America. So STFU and go away.

Hey Collins, you congress pukes are answerable to your constituents - so you better vote the way they tell you. Be a jerk like Romney you better be ready to face the music and a probable election challenge.

Collins needs to be retired right after Romney and Murkowski.

Romney threw away the 2012 election (he was leading PLUS Obama was packing to leave the White House — and Romney stopped campaigning seriously and never criticized Obama’s weaknesses the way he has been attacking PDJT’s strengths)

Murkowski is just as embarrassing as Romney, needless to say more. A real loser in public office.

I do not believe the GOP can be reformed. I understand the views of those who think we can take it over by working from the bottom up. The problem is that as new blood is getting put into the system the party apparatus is working overtime to turn the new members into RINOs.

When something repeatedly disappoints and fails to produce beneficial results its time to start looking at alternatives and new solutions. I also think many people don’t appreciate how effective the GOP is inn turning people into RINOs. They are actually very good at it. In fact, its essentially the raison d’être of the party.

We need a party that is totally focused on reducing the size of government and will do everything in its power to accomplish that objective. If you think about it, an overbearing government is one of the main reasons for most of the underlying problems in this country. The GOP will never fight to scale back government.

Susan Collins has no standing in utah.

Very disappointed in utah Republicans.

If Romney’s votes aren’t the definition of actions going against party platforms, for no reason other than personal animus....censure is dead in utah gop politics. They can’t even muster enough balls to slap Romney’s wrists?

Utah self owned!!!

Safely in her sinecure seat, she can indulge her democrat fantasies for about four more years, when she will suddenly start acting like a conservative again for the campaign. Mccain’s ghost lives large in several of the faux GOP’ers occupying space that could otherwise go to republicans.

Incumbents love nothing more than their fellow incumbents. The obsession with collegiality among the rulers tends to ruin what Congress ought to be: A place where the constituents get a voice.
