As an Indonesian navy submarine crewed by 53 men glided below the surface of the Bali Sea during a routine training exercise, it may have been hit by an invisible but powerful force that dragged them to the deep.
Indonesian navy officials suspect an internal solitary wave, known to occur in the seas around Bali, may have caused the sinking of KRI Nanggala 402, and the loss of its 53 crew.
The vessel sank to a depth of 838 metres, far beyond the reach of rescuers.
As the personal effects of crew members floated up and the oxygen supply on board slowly dwindled, officials said there was no chance anyone survived.
The question remained: What went wrong?
Many theories have been put forward but authorities now say there is evidence an underwater wave โ that can exert an intense vertical pull below the sea surface โ occurred in the Bali Sea around the very time the submarine disappeared last Wednesday morning.

BUCKMAN!
“”
Yeah, but all in burkinis or whatever the hell muzzie women wear at the beach.
If we’ve learned anything from the South China Sea it’s that China will claim the waters adjacent to your islands thereby making a fiction of your status as an independent nation. Having a well trained submarine force is a good way of keeping the Chinese Navy off your front lawn.
Yes, itโs their waters, the same way a US sub operates off our own coasts.
My guess is that this accident was probably uncontrolled flooding in the forward torpedo room leading to a main battery failure then implosion. 2nd guess, hot battery in those old torpedos caused an explosion in the tube or the sub itself. Then implosion.
Polishing the old torpedo sir?
Stepanik
a lot of bad things could have happened but they recorded no implosion, so that would indicate flooding
Supposedly my grandfather was a submariner before WWI (he got a hardship discharge after war was declared because his wife had died leaving my aunt motherless).
I always feel bad for sailors who die in submarines, it seems you wouldn’t have a chance of survival.
May these men rest in peace and may the Lord comfort their families.
If they have acoustic listening systems it could take a while to interpret the data. They might have to pull in ASW consultants from the RN, Australia or the USN. I don’t necessarily think they’ll have to, but I’d an Australian sub was in the area, her sonar recordings might take a while to get.
torpedo’s do not use battery’s but they sound like electric razors on sonar, inner torpedo door is never opened before the outer door and the tube is flooded, still... why no implosion?
usually on drills you shoot water slugs
we will never know what happened
Lmao great movie
Yikes! Cannot imagine what those subs were like.
Underwater Tsunami.... yeah, that’s it๐
“”The wave was about two nautical miles [in speed]”
yep ...
“Right now, Captain Tupolev is removing the safety features on all his weapons...”
“angles and dangles is a hoot”
Angles and dangles do no compare to having to perform real evasive maneuvers.
