Those Apollo 11 guys were my heroes back then.
Collins stayed with the ship as I recall.
One of the historic human beings.
God bless his family.
Good, long life and one helluva run.
RIP Hero, Pioneer, Patriot.
RIP! The man who had the loneliest job in space.
Not COVID, just natural causes.
Mine too
In a leg cast all that summer and was glued to the TV for the the coverage of that historic achievement
Right he stayed in the command module orbiting the moon. I read recently that while Neil and Buzz were training for the landing Collins was training to fly the spacecraft alone in the event of a disaster on the moon.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon. Buzz was the Luner Module pilot, and had to deal with the infamous "1201 alarm" from the privative flight control computer. And of course, Neil Armstrong famously took the first steps on the Moon and bungled his carefully rehearsed first words from the surface of the Moon: "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for Mankind." Neil forgot the (a).
Michael Collins was the Command Module pilot, and remained in orbit around the Moon for the entire time that Armstrong and Aldrin made history.
Apollo 11 was peak America. We’re a far different (worse) country than we were 52 years ago. Mike Collins, R.I.P.
I must admit that my favorite episode of The Crown was the one that centered around the Apollo 11 mission and Prince Philip’s fascination with it.
Rest in Peace, Michael.................
See post 13.
Ian Anderson wrote him an homage, way back when.
RIP
RIP American Hero, nice to see him on TV during the 50th Apollo 11 Anniversary 2 years ago.
Sad day. That leaves only Buzz Aldrin (91) from the Apollo 11 crew.
I have to hand it to these Apollo Astronauts, many of them live long lives! God bless them.
