The Left’s greatest trick was to turn Vietnam into “Nixon’s War”, and everybody forgot about LBJ.
I remember after the war and everybody was back home they started reporting about the atrocities committed by the communists. Joan Baez said “We have to do something to stop that.” We tried to do something, but people like Joan were against it when it mattered.
But not the end of the killing, not by a long shot.
Vietnam is more capitalist now, than communist. And they switched on their own without us firing a shot.
Of course those who served are all to be respected.
It was the US leadership at the time who were the bone headed fools.
Vietnam switched on their own from text book communism, after they saw how communism works. We had no reason to sacrifice our young soldiers in the rice paddies, 8000 miles away from home.
It wasn’t about Vietnam, it was about not allowing the Soviets to gobble up the Third World without a fight.
The Soviet Union probably still exists today had we not fought in Vietnam.

Soviet Union could barely create livable economy in USSR.
They were in no shape to gobble up any SE Asian country.
Vietnam is not the same as Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Those were bordering states, easy to invade by land. There is no land route from Russia to Vietnam.
