Black Rage: It’s All About the Humiliation

Ask yourself: suppose you belonged to a social group that led the world in drugged-out losers resisting arrest and teenage knife fighters? How would it make you feel?

The answer is obvious. You would feel humiliated.

Now you understand what America’s blacks are feeling in the wake of the righteous Chauvin conviction and the tragic death of Knife Girl.

But what do people feel when they are humiliated? I went to Churchill’s famous homily:

In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Good Will.

But whatabout Humiliation? What would the world’s foremost cigar smoker say about that? It is obvious:

In Humiliation: Rage.

So now you know why blacks are so angry. It’s not the systemic racism, not the Whiteness, not the “white oppressors.” It’s the humiliation.

But why?

I will tell you. The humiliating thing about being black is that everything has been done for you, by virtue-signalling whites.

Start with the anti-slavery movement, courtesy of William Wilberforce, the rich-kid son of a Brit merchant in the Baltic trade. What was that all about? Justice for blacks? Or virtue-signalling for rich-kid whites?

Proceed to the American Civil War. What was that all about? Freedom for Negroes? Or was it just Northerners and Southerners aching to diss each other?

Affirmative action, minority set-asides, extra points on exams, priority in admissions and hiring and refusal to prosecute are all humiliating. Better to hold minorities to the same standard as other people. But then they won’t be able to blame their failures on Whitey.

There is a lot of truth in this. An acute example is the racialist hysteria on campus. Suppose you are a black professor whose career from middle school forward has been on the affirmative action track. You have been passed along with rewards at every step that you haven't earned; you know it, and everyone around you knows it, but it is forbidden to acknowledge the fact. You are AA'd through college. You are AA'd through grad school. You can't cut the mustard in a real academic department, but you get the token AA slot or, very likely, are shunted off to one of the woke studies programs, which were created precisely in order to allow universities to hit their AA targets. In such an environment, every day becomes a series of petty humiliations, of which you are forbidden to speak. The result is a howling rage that is projected outward. This is the font of racial radicalism in academia today.

And note that the victims of this are not stupid people. They are usually reasonably bright people who could have gone on to solid careers on the basis of merit had they been steered appropriately. The problem is not that they are incapable; the problem is that they have been systematically promoted beyond their level in an "emperor has no clothes" scam that no one will call out. The dynamic is probably similar to the problems associated in aristocratic societies with the selection for senior positions of inadequately prepared and often not-so-bright people on the basis of parentage. The aristocrats in charge were often the least competent people in the room, and everyone knew it. The result was toxic class consciousness on both sides.

None of this applies to the black academics who earn their way on merit. Theirs is a different problem. They have earned their place through excellence. But they are inevitably tarred by association with the clowns. That produces a different kind of rage, as well as a contempt for the dishonesty of the university itself.

This becomes an endless cycle, which is of course precisely what the cultural Marxists want. If you want to destroy an institution and a society, this is a good way to do it.

Push-pull. The days of rage ends when Blacks see themselves as individual human beings first and their individual lives began when they were born, not 7 generations ago when their ancestors were brought here. That is over with. The kid carrying the gun is carrying it not because of something that happened to his ancestor 200 years ago. He is carrying it because of something that happened to him since he was born. Fix that and you have a start on fixing the culture that produced him.

Author is right about the problem (rage among blacks) but wrong about the solution. Demand that blacks behave like civilized human beings or they will be separated from the rest of the population.

Nothing else will suffice.

It's one of the correlaries of the mismatch thesis. The black kid with 1250 on his SATs is not a bad student. He is a well above average student who would be a fine match at Penn State or Tennessee or Clemson or many other solid, somewhat above average universities. He could earn a solid degree in a solid field and go on to a fine career based entirely on merit. If he catches fire academically and/or finds a passion, he may shoot for the elite in grad school and beyond. But if Harvard AAs him in -- and based on the data that emerged in the recent admissions litigation, Harvard regards a 1250 SAT score plus black skin as prime Harvard material -- he is thrown into a situation in which he's immediately in the academic cellar. He's far behind at the start and unlikely to catch up. Harvard's solution is to toss him into grievance studies where there are no standards and where he is taught that all of society is a vast racist conspiracy to keep him down. He is likely to emerge well-educated, resentful, angry and unfit for employment anywhere except government or academia, where a racialized bad attitude is now prized as being woke. And the cycle repeats.

It's easy to criticize the result. But it's always important to remember that this kid started out as a pretty decent student who could have earned success had he not been set up for failure.
