PIERS MORGAN: RIP The Oscars – these grim, woke-ravaged, fun-devoid awards were a howlingly dull train-wreck that killed the Hollywood dream stone dead
UK Daily Mail ^ | April 27 2021 | Piers Morgan

The howl was loud, prolonged, anguished and animated.

Actress Frances McDormand's bizarre imitation of a wolf was comfortably the most surprising and interesting part of this year's Oscars.

And although there was a heartfelt story behind it – she was paying tribute to a sound engineer on her movie Nomadland named Michael Wolf Snyder who took his life earlier this year – the howl perfectly encapsulated my own feelings watching the most unwatchable Academy Awards in history.

I for one am thankful that the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I’ll even throw in the Hobbit films were produced and distributed somewhat before or at least in the interstitial time before Hollywood in general really went full on, shithouse rat insane.

Korean filmmaking has set itself apart from other countries, whose film industries have been stagnant or had their heydays in the past. And let’s not pretend there’s anything remotely comparable to the Oscars in prestige and relevance in other countries. Oscars is meant to celebrate the creme de la creme of the world.

I tried to think about an alternative to the DM and I couldn’t really think of one. The Guardian? The Express? There really isn’t a standout paper in the UK.

The Telegraph used to be a good, straight up paper. I haven't read them for years though.

Peter Jackson’s 1917 was well deserving of its award. Should have got best picture in 2019. Was glad to hear Anthony Hopkins got best actor award

The Telegraph is still good. But you can only read it through paid subscription online. We do get it and they report the news straight.

PS-I do like the DM. My British husband says it is only trash now. And we both agree that the Enquirer stories always have a nugget of truth at their core. The NE was the first place to report on John Edwards’ affair.

You are correct. “They shall not grow old” was amazing. I think I’ve watched it a dozen times. It never grows old.

At its worst, the Daily Mail is a much more solid and superior publication than the National Enquirer.
And a far older publication as well.
No fan of the Daily Mail, but the National Enquirer? Puleeze.

Didn’t the Enquirer break the John Edwards affair story?

Yeah.
But then that doesnt even come close to covering up for the normal, crazy National Enquirer frontpage headlines like these....

Maybe that's why I never see any posts referring to it.

I guessing that “received its due” means that Koreans have been making good movies and Hollywood wasn’t noticing, not that one was picked this year for some other reason unrelated to the film’s quality.
