The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it will move to grant California permission to set stricter climate requirements for cars and SUVs, a reversal of a key Trump administration policy.
The step, coming days after the Transportation Department withdrew Trump-era restrictions of state tailpipe emission rules, could help pave the way for a broader climate deal with the nation’s automakers. The EPA will hold a virtual public hearing on its proposal on June 2, and will take comment on the plan until July 6.
Alliance For Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella, whose members produce nearly all of the cars and light trucks sold in the United States, said in a statement that he hopes Monday’s announcement is “a step to a revised national program that includes California and brings all automakers under a unified set of common requirements and ensures a level, competitive playing field.”

A national standard will simply production and control costs.
The Air Quality of the LA Basin has always led the way in the US to regulate vehicle emissions.
Even though the EPA attempted to address air quality issues in Denver, the place still seems to have problems.
Both places are too crowded. And increasingly so. All of the peeps there need to just plug into The Matrix...
Could someone please explain to me the difference between the government of California and the government of Fascist Italy at this juncture?
This is from the Bee, right?
After all, we know without doubt that CA is not exactly composed of real humans any more.
Stop all air traffic to and from LA and San Fran..et al.
Ping.
So we all will have to drive expensive lousy cars.
I’m gonna back up to the state line and let the Ram idle for hours. 😂🙌
California’s moving at high speed on Obama’s agenda because they mistakenly believe they lead the nation.
These “climate” idiots are just using an unproven leftist THEORY to control the masses. If they were really worried about too much CO2 in the atmosphere, they would force other countries to stop logging off the rainforests which are natural heat sinks and build photosynthesis plants instead of electric frickin’ cars that are worthless unless the outside temperature is 70 degrees. What a bunch of horse manure they are feeding people in a daily basis.
I already do. 😆
They are piling-on reasons to loathe the government of the State of California.
Just in time for the Maunder Minimum.
It would be amusing if other states argue that they can do the same. Especially states that decide to relax such standards.
One more reason to move!
Hey, there are more FReepers from CA and our own Jim Rob is in CA. CA Freepers lead in contributions to keep FR running, too.
“One more reason to move!”
That’s the first reaction, isn’t it? But it starts in CA and rapidly sweeps over the entire country. Then the manufacturers fall in line and you won’t be able to buy an ICE powered car or SUV anywhere in the country. If you get a black market one from abroad, where will you get the gasoline? Maybe you’ll still be able to buy diesel because trucks and construction equipment will still use it...for a while.
In other words, there is nowhere to flee.
Even in Idaho, we use unleaded fuel with alcohol. It’s very hard to find gasoline without alcohol in it (to save your small engines).
ICE autos will no longer be made. Gasoline will stop being produced.
And that will be that.
Thank God people in California make decent money. Average 62K that means half make a ton more. They will need it for a car.
