Senate defeats legislation to ban discrimination against Asian-Americans in higher education

Senator Cruz called out Yale for discrimination

Senate Democrats voted down an amendment from Senate Republicans, including Ted Cruz, John Kennedy, and Bill Haggerty.

It would have barred “Federal funding for any institution of higher education that discriminates against Asian Americans in recruitment, applicant review, or admissions.”

“This amendment is straightforward, it targets the ongoing discrimination that is being directed against Asian-Americans by colleges and universities across the country,” Cruz said.

He specifically mentioned Harvard and Yale as “denying admission to qualified Asian-American applicants in favor of underrepresented minority groups.”

Cruz said that the Department of Justice had sued these universities, until President Joe Biden pulled DOJ support for the lawsuits.

“We have major universities in this country that are discriminating in admissions against Asian-Americans,” Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy said. “Discrimination is discrimination,” Kennedy said.

“This is wrong, it is contemptible, it is odious,” Kennedy said of the discrimination against Asian-Americans.

It gained 49 Republican votes against 48 Democratic votes — it needed 60 votes to pass.

The Texas Republican’s amendment came as part of a vote on Senate legislation called the “COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act” that would require “expedited review of hate crimes” by the Department of Justice.

The legislation from Hawaii Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono would “establish online reporting of hate crimes or incidents” and “expand public education campaigns aimed at raising awareness of hate crimes and reaching victims.”

The hate crime legislation, sponsored by Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono, passed the Senate 94-1, with Missouri Republican Josh Hawley the only no vote.

Hirono called the amendment a “cynical attack” on universities that seek to “increase diversity.”

“This amendment also threatens colleges and universities with the loss of all federal funding for pursuing policies” that had been upheld by the court system, Hirono said.

Hirono’s legislation awaits a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democrats are racists.

Hands down. But then... they always have been - in the 1960s... in the 1860s...

Yeah,
Let get after those damned Asians.
They are the ones causing all the riots and trouble!
Oh wait a moment, they aren’t the ones causing trouble.
But hey, we can’t state which among us that would be or else you be racist.

Remember Asian-Americans are mostly Indians nowadays. And Indians absolutely excel in discrimination against Americans and they absolutely have disdain for Americans. Bravo to the Senate.

Now remove Indians from the Asian category, and yeah, I’ll be complaining about the Senate’s decision (being the wrong type of Asian-American myself - the Michelle Malkin type)

They established quotas to restrict Jewish students and this was partly why Jewish places of higher learning began.

And we know they would be overrun with Asian Americans in universities if they allowed them unfettered access based on merit and academic achievement. Higher math, anyone?

So now of course we have graduates proud they came from the college where Maxine Waters was valedictorian and graduated summa cum laude.

One brief excerpt from Wikipedia:
Certain private universities, most notably Harvard, introduced policies which effectively placed a quota on the number of Jews admitted to the university. According to historian David Oshinsky, on writing about Jonas Salk, “Most of the surrounding medical schools (Cornell, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Yale) had rigid quotas in place. In 1935 Yale accepted 76 applicants from a pool of 501. About 200 of those applicants were Jewish and only five got in.” He notes that Dean Milton Winternitz’s instructions were remarkably precise: “Never admit more than five Jews, take only two Italian Catholics, and take no blacks at all.” As a result, Oshinsky added, “Jonas Salk and hundreds like him” enrolled in New York University instead. Physicist and Nobel laureate Richard P. Feynman was turned away from Columbia College in the 1930s and went to MIT instead.

Yale University’s informal admissions policy to restrict the school’s Jewish student body to around 10 percent ended in the early 1960s.

According to this article Asian-Americans went roughly 2-1 for Biden in 2020. That probably won’t change much, given how the media will bury this Asian discrimination story and replace it with “All Republicans are racists.”

Denying admission to qualified Asian-American applicants.

What don’t they rate for the quota count list?.

After the democrats got the maximum mileage that they could out of the “Asian hate crimes,” they are now going back to their standard mode of denying Asians college opportunities in favor of failing demographics.

It gained 49 Republican votes against 48 Democratic votes — it needed 60 votes to pass.

No. It needed half of the voting senators, i.e. 49. It only needed 60 to invoke cloture to break a filibuster. Remember that "born in racism" filibuster the Democrats are trying to get rid of after using hundreds of times during the Trump administration? Did the Democrats actually invoke it? Did the Republicans force them to hold the floor and speak 24 hours a day to prevent this legislation?

Evil Democrats and spineless Republicans... like usual.

Why is the GOPee wasting time and energy pushing worthless legislation of this sort instead of doing everything in their power to crush the criminal, illegitimate Marxocrat tyranny we now suffer under? Because pointless political posturing in cahoots with their Marxocrat colleagues in crime is all they’ve ever done. GOPee Delenda Est!

But, but, I thought the Democrats cared about Asians! They spent 5 whole minutes talking about anti-Asian hate and how it’s the white supremacists’ fault if a black man punches an Asian person. I am shocked, shocked that they favor this blatant anti-Asian discrimination! /s

In all seriousness, affirmative action punishes Asians even more than it does whites. An Asian applicant must score 140 points higher than a white applicant, 270 points higher than a Hispanic applicant, and 450 points higher than a black applicant to be admitted to Harvard. Asians have long been punished by white liberals for the sin of being successful independent of Whitey’s charity.

Exactly. Asians voted for Biden.

I’m way beyond the point that I care what happens to groups that vote Democrat.

Asian interest groups also have been busy claiming that attacks on Asians are the result of white supremacy.

They are reaping what they sowed.

Technical and scientifically yes. However...

But just like in the UK, Indians are considered “Asian” in the US

“The Census Bureau defines a person of the Asian race as “having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.”
