Indonesia’s navy on Saturday declared its missing submarine had sunk and cracked open, killing 53 crew members aboard, after finding items from the vessel over the past two days.
Military chief Hadi Tjahjanto said the presence of an oil slick as well as debris near the site where the submarine’s last dive on Wednesday off the island of Bali were clear proof the KRI Nanggala 402 sank. Indonesia earlier considered the vessel to be only missing.
Navy Chief Yudo Margono told a press conference in Bali, “If it’s an explosion, it will be in pieces. The cracks happened gradually in some parts when it went down from 300 meters to 400 meters to 500 meters ... If there was an explosion, it would be heard by the sonar.”
The navy previously said it believes the submarine sank to a depth of 600-700 meters (2,000-2,300 feet), much deeper than its collapse depth of 200 meters (655 feet), at which point water pressure would be greater than the hull could withstand.
The cause of the disappearance was still uncertain. The navy had previously said an electrical failure could have left the submarine unable to execute emergency procedures to resurface.

Maybe it's a racing submarine.
Agree, RIP
And I can trace my history
Down one generation to my home
In one of our submarines
(One of the best songs of the 80s IMHO)
“What in the world does Indonesia need with a submarine?”
To keep an eye on it’s commercial airliners...?
Looks Chinese.
Rest in peace, soldiers.
My heart goes out to their families.
Ouch...LOL!
It won't matter if China gets serious - without an actively interventionist US Navy they could ultimately conquer Southeast Asia and even Australia with far less difficulty than Japan faced in 1942. They have the economic power to compel obedience, which Japan did not. Indonesia having a submarine or two might deter some illegal fishing vessels - that's about it.
Poor submariners....RIP....
Very good.
Horrible. If I ever had to go into one, I’d bring a cyanide pill.
Indonesia is a collection of about 16,000 islands with a number of globally important sealanes running through it. Also, there is their dispute with China over the Natuna Islands which both countries claim (one look at the map gives you an idea of how valid China's claim is...).
Stealthy access to address a threat? Drug interdiction? Indonesia is an island nation.
Why?
German. Type 209
Actually, Indonesia has (or had) six subs, with three more currently on order.
You beat me to it.
I blame China.
OK, I give up. A ‘torpedo straightener’?
In addition China wants to rule the world.
What better timing will they ever have with the U.S. crippled by so many different issues, such as a weak president, a deeply divided nation, and the worldwide pandemic in play? So they start attacking smaller nations within their immediate realm to seize control of that part of the world.
Not all countries are going to be as easy to capture as the U.S. in its current state. They don't have to go after the U.S. directly, they can just sit back on that front and let the events unfold for the country ti destroy itself.
it’s like relative bearings...
“I’ll bet China is behind the sinking of that sub.”
I was thinking that also.
One other asked me to explain why I felt as I did. So I posted a response to that person.
