A high-ranking Norfolk Police officer who was found donating to the defense fund of Kyle Rittenhouse has been fired from the police department.
Kyle Rittenhouse is the man charged with the murder of two Black Lives Matter protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last August.
According to the Guardian newspaper on Friday, Sgt. William Kelly, who served as the executive officer of NPD’s internal affairs division, made an anonymous $25 donation to Rittenhouse’s defense in September. However Kelly used an official email address linked to himself, the Guardian reported.
The revelation came after a data breach of a Christian crowdfunding GiveSendGo, which showed official email addresses belonging to many police officers and public officials. The information was shared with the Guardian by the transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets.
The alleged donation from Kelly was made on September 3 and included the comment, “God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong” and “Every rank and file police officer supports you. Don’t be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.”
Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone said Kelly was initially reassigned to another division pending the results of an administrative investigation. He did not identify Kelly in the statement.
According to Kelly’s LinkedIn page, he had been with the Norfolk Police Department for 18 years. He has been the executive officer of internal affairs for the last two months.
In a release sent Tuesday, Norfolk City Manager Chip Filer said he has accepted the recommendation of Chief Boone to relieve Kelly of his duty.
Read the statement from Norfolk City Manager Chip Filer below:
I have reviewed the results of the internal investigation involving Lt. William Kelly. Chief Larry Boone and I have concluded Lt. Kelly’s actions are in violation of City and departmental policies. His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. The City of Norfolk has a standard of behavior for all employees, and we will hold staff accountable.
In a statement to local residents, Chief Boone said he wants people to know that the department will represent and uphold organizational values.
“A police department cannot do its job when the public loses trust with those whose duty is to serve and protect them,” said Chief Boone. “We do not want perceptions of any individual officer to undermine the relations between the Norfolk Police Department and the community.”
Chief Boone ended his statement asking community members to continue supporting the officers of the department.
Kelly is able to appeal the decision.
He violated policy in using an official e-mail. Appropriate punishment should have been at most a letter in his file.
Some localities actually have regulations requiring employee dismissal in the event of donations made or unofficial actions taken using official email or resources. I do not know if this is the case in Norfolk, but if it is then it was (sadly) deserved.
Just wait a proper period of time, ditch the electronics, and make sure there's no cameras.
Years ago I worked with a couple. The lady carried on an affair with a coworker.
The lady and her lover were both fired for using company network (e-Mail and chat ), to carry on their affair.
It wasn’t so anonymous afterall, was it?
Larry Boone seems like a filthy POS backstabbing his team.
I notice how Kyle is described as a man yet the black thugs the same age are usually described as a child.
POS like this Boone is the problem. I can go on about how every level of seemingly everything is infected with this rot. At this point if you cherish anything of importance or have anything that can come back to due harm in anyway NEVER EVER put it on the web and net no matter what anyone says about security.
How about those who made donations to BLM????
Those who donated to BLM?
Like Bank of America?
Totally Nuts!
If he used official email, he’s too dumb to be a cop.
Then again, I have it on good authority that many departments don’t hire for brains.
Leftists who fired people over their personal life activities need to suffer consequences.
I won’t say anything about the Chief of Police of Norfolk but from what I know of law enforcement down in the southern part of Virginia, its leadership sucks big leftist time (Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Norfolk etc).
A classmate and friend of mine was a POC down there many years ago. Eventually I believe he quite because of the political PC shit going on there and the feral animals who overran the beach cities.
SUE THEM.
Until our side wins some significant law suits, this will continue.
I wonder why Twitter and Facebook aren’t blocking this story since it’s based on a hack. You know Luke they blocked hunter bidens story.
Lawsuit...millions of dollars.
25 bucks. How stupid to use a company email.
Larry Boone needs to be worked on with pliers and a blowtorch to find out if he made this decision himself, or if orders came from elsewhere. Until we raise the black flag and start rolling up their ratlines, this is only going to get worse.
