Governor Polis signs gun bills into law

DENVER (KDVR) — Governor Polis had a busy day of signing bills Monday. He started the day off by signing two measures designed to decrease gun violence into law.
In a tearful ceremony, Polis took a step to make sure the state has a better chance of making sure guns are accounted for.
“This bill simply makes sure that if you’re a gun owner and your firearm is lost or stolen, you need to report it within five days. It’s the right thing to do for the people we care about. Many Coloradans already report lost or stolen guns. Now, they have to,” Polis said.
Under the lost and stolen firearm legislation, if an owner does not report the firearm lost or stolen within five days of them realizing its missing, the first instance will be a civil infraction with a fine of $25. The second offense is a misdemeanor with fines up to $500.
Lawmakers named the bill after Isabella Joy Thallas who was killed after someone shot her with an unreported stolen gun.
“What saddens me and what hurts the most is that it takes a mother of murdered daughter to stand up and speak and try to make a difference in this state,” Ana Thallas, Isabella’s mother, said as she fought back tears.
The Thallas family are not the only ones speaking up.
Maisha Fields turned her grief into passion after her brother Javad Fields was murdered in 2005 by people using untraceable guns. Fields backed this effort but is calling on lawmakers to do more.
“What I’d like to see is an awakening of the American people also of our elected officials to have a greater sense of urgency,” Fields said. “We need to find out where these guns are coming from. We need to keep track of them and then we need to get them out of our communities. We need elected officials with the courage to do it.”
Lawmakers also signed a bill that sparked 10 hours of debate on the floor of the legislature. The Safe Storage of Firearms Act will require gun dealers to provide a lock with firearms they sell starting this July. It also adds an unlawful storage charge if a gun is unsecure when a child is present.
“This bill upholds safety standards from the point of sale. To make sure new and used guns come with a trigger or cable locking device when they are sold,” Polis said.
“People believe in the idea of safe and responsible gun ownership and this is your opportunity right here. With this bill, we are defining what safe storage is,” said bill sponsor Kyle Mullica.
Votes for the bills mostly fell along party lines in the House and Senate; with many voting against them saying the measures will not do much to address the gun crisis.
Tearful? Crying like Boner now?
It’s all about emotion.
“We need to find out where these guns are coming from. We need to keep track of them and then we need to get them out of our communities. We need elected officials with the courage to do it.”
In 1976, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police published a position paper on gun control, in which it stated “the licensing, registration, and serializing of firearms will not act as a deterrent to violence and will not necessarily identify the person perpetrating the crime”. It seems that this legislation in Colorado is basically a fool’s errand given what senior law enforcement officials said in 1976.
It’s called ‘feel good’ legislation. Does nothing.
Because criminals and truly sick people always report stuff thats missing ..
***The Safe Storage of Firearms Act will require gun dealers to provide a lock with firearms they sell starting this July. ***
I have read that there was a national push for gun and trigger locks. And who was backing it? Anti-gun groups AND -—lock manufacturers.
Nothing better than to make a product then have the government demand it’s use by everyone.
This won’t solve jack.
It’s wise to report a stolen firearm.
But as to this law, how exactly does the Governor perceive it capable of saving any lives? Maybe the Governor could cry harder to make it more effective at stopping crime?
Hawaii has a similar law and since “all our guns are registered” it will be easy to find the stolen gun, as the crooks register theirs also.
First problem is you have to realize it was stolen.
Second is knowing when it was stolen, as many of our guns are buried somewhere, that will be hard to figure out.
Third is our police have so little to do, that they will drop everything and do a non-stop search for the stolen guns, “for the sake of the children”.
I tire of Democrat “Feel good” laws.
How about we just make Murder illegal and that will solve the problem?
Gun owner to intruder: “Give me a couple of minutes while I get my firearm from the safe and remove the trigger lock!”’
The only problem that politicians are concerned with solving is the problem of getting reelected in the next election.
According to Denver Police, the suspect, Michael Close — who has since been charged with first-degree murder — took the rifle from Sgt. Daniel Politica's home without the officer's knowledge or permission. Upon learning his rifle was missing and that it may have been used in this homicide, DPD said Politica notified investigators that the rifle belonged to him. The rifle was not issued to the officer by DPD and the department said AK-47s are not authorized for on-duty use. DPD also said Close and Politica were friends.
Close murdered the girl and shot her boyfirened becasue their dog pooped near his apartment and they didn't pick it up. He has since pleaded insanity.
Reporting a gun stolen means nothing. Cops rarely find stolen weapons.
I believe that the reason the left owns the gun debate and is inching gun confiscation close to reality is that no one on the right has come up with a workable plan to combat gun violence. Even when the right proposes some ideas that might help, there is little to no support from conservative law makers who seem to be in bed with the left on this issue.
Yeah, and we know just how well the LIEbrals listened to that recommendation. Now those chiefs have all retired, and their replacements have all been browbeaten and propagandized into feeling that gun registries and restrictions actually do something.
Mulroney and Harper both dropped the ball, too.
Note: I did say FEEL. We both know how well these registries and restrictions actually work.
Two more laws designed to put more black people in prison.
The lack of logic is astounding
Punish law-abiding citizens for the crimes committed by criminals. This woman wouldn’t be any less dead if the gun had been reported stolen, nucking futs.
Remember that this is the same legislature that outlawed larger magazines because they thought when the bullets were gone the magazines would be thrown away. The video of the idiot legislator saying that is probably still up there on YouTube
“What I’d like to see is an awakening of the American people also of our elected officials to have a greater sense of urgency,” Fields said. “We need to find out where these guns are coming from. We need to keep track of them and then we need to get them out of our communities. We need elected officials with the courage to do it.”
Wouldn't it be better to track the perps using the gun's...This all sounds like it's the gun's fault that people died...not the murdering bass turd that pulled the trigger.
When we start hanging perps when they are dead to rights guilty..then we will see murder rates drop.
