Reliable data is at the heart of any government response to the pandemic, without which planning for hospital vacancies, oxygen and medicine becomes difficult, experts say.
Government officials say the mismatch in death tallies may be caused by several factors, including over-caution.
A senior state health official said the increase in numbers of cremations had been due to bodies being cremated using COVID protocols "even if there is 0.1% probability of the person being positive".
"In many cases, patients come to hospital in an extremely critical condition and die before they are tested, and there are instances where patients are brought dead to hospital, and we do not know if they are positive or not," the official said.

Why has the US homeless population been spared?
How did China, the country of origin for covid, completely eradicate the virus and why aren't we seeing emerging variants?
Sometimes I wonder if either the numbers in the west are being inflated or someone is deliberately spreading covid and variants in western nations.
Why haven’t the homosexuals who often have compromised immune systems been obliterated?
Is China full of fat people like here? Is not being a fatty the default for helping to be killed off with covid?
Just like Communist China did...
YET NO INDIAN FLIGHT BAN
I guess importing Indian workers to replace Americans are far more important than keeping further strains of this virus out of the US.
Every other hotspot had a flight ban attached to it. Except India. Why?
In a country with a population of over one billion and they notice non-stop cremations?
Ya think?
And this is supposed to be proof that it’s from COVID deaths?
Give me a break. That’s just speculation and fear mongering.
3rd world countries have people with a high rate of antibodies in their systems from living with all the diseases in what ever country. Their bodies and systems are aligned properly to fight off diseases.
Over pampered American are soft and overly protected from disease so our body systems are weak. I probably did not explain this properly but don’t know how to explain it otherwise.
“Every other hotspot had a flight ban attached to it. Except India. Why?”
Money. Cheaper labor for U.S. corporations.

The strong Indian tech lobby (NASSCOM) in the US, and an Indian VP in the White House.
India now has 1/2 of all the world’s new cases - based on Worldmeters and your know there is serious underreporting there
I remember the reports of non-stop black smoke coming out of the crematoreums in Mexico. So people went to look and even went inside to ask about it.
Nothing going on whatsoever. It was all a complete lie.
Burning pyres visible from space no doubt. Say...don’t nonstop cremations cause global warming?
#1 - Timing (political). Biden Administration Vs. Trump Administration. Biden philosophy is to pretty much let anyone in - it's not just specific to India with these people. See "US southern border", time = present. Criminals, sex trafficker's, ill (not just COVID), you name it...
#2 - Timing (health perspective). The key word you said yourself: "Had" Vaccination progress in the USA is very good, despite the J&J pause. Most vulnerable elderly are either already dead, recovered from a tough bout with COVID and likely have good immunity now (tho' they may well have complications like long term lung damage), or are fully vaccinated. So far, most data has Pfizer and Moderna looking pretty good against the variants.
So far as I can tell, CDC is PRESENTLY treating India and, for example, Philippines, both with modest case number density previously, but higher case numbers now, very similarly if not the same, with regard to travel to the US.

It’s a well known fact that no one in India died before the CCP bioweapon was released.
In addition to others' comments, I'd add that population mobility and mass transit are 2 large factors in virus spread.
Why has the US homeless population been spared?
Again, their mobility is likely low. Their prior exposure to cold-type coronaviruses may be high. Obesity - hmmm...
I doubt homelessness shows up on death certs.
Out side of those things, well, I'd need more info. / data to speculate.
How did China, the country of origin for covid, completely eradicate the virus and why aren't we seeing emerging variants?
Possibly high volume prior exposures to other coronaviruses could play a role. But, more important, China is a dictatorship with very high monitoring and control. Besides, who in God's name takes China's data on volume of COVID cases or fatalities seriously?
Emergent locations can't always be determined if the location's country doesn't admit it.
Sometimes I wonder if either the numbers in the west are being inflated or someone is deliberately spreading covid and variants in western nations.
Fairly considerable anecdotal evidence of my own says US numbers are in the ballpark. But deliberate spread by bad actors certainly could be a factor.
One crematorium owner said pre covid they did 20 cremations per day. Now they are doing 30
People are looking at the official numbers and they are not adding up. Another crematorium owner said the official covid deaths was 25 from his town per day but he is creating 60 + per day from the covid only hospital.
300 not 30
India is on HCQ and Ivermectin. The whole country, pretty much. 1/10 our death rate.
You do realize the New Delhi hospitals in the capitol are on the verge of collapse?

New Delhi, India’s capital, recorded 25,500 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, and approximately one in three people tested positive, warned Arvind Kejriwal, the local chief executive. He urged the government to provide more hospital bed capacity.
Fewer than 100 intensive care beds were available Saturday in India’s capital of more than 20 million people, Kejriwal said, as social media was flooded with complaints about a lack of beds, medical oxygen, and medicines.
“The most worrying thing is that in the last 24 hours, the positivity rate has gone up to about 30 percent from 24 percent (...) Cases are going up very fast. Beds are filling up fast,” said the official, who stated that 65 percent of the patients are under 45 years old.
In a separate statement, the city government said it had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s federal administration about “the dire need for beds and oxygen.”
With a population of 1.3 billion, India reported 261,500 new cases yesterday, bringing the total number of infections to nearly 14.8 million, second only to the United States, which has reported more than 31 million infections.

It’s ticking around 1%.
