Subheading: Policy could be paired with proposal to ban menthols; FDA must decide whether to pursue menthol ban by April 29
The Biden administration is considering requiring tobacco companies to reduce the nicotine levels in all cigarettes sold in the U.S. to levels at which they are no longer addictive, according to people familiar with the matter.
Administration officials are considering the policy as they approach a deadline for declaring the administration’s intentions on another tobacco question: whether or not to ban menthol cigarettes.
....
Nicotine itself doesn’t cause cancer, heart disease or lung disease, according to the FDA. But it hooks people on cigarettes, which are linked to 480,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.
....
Lowering nicotine in cigarettes has been a subject of discussion inside the FDA since the 1990s. It can be done in different ways, such as genetically modifying tobacco plants or stripping nicotine from the leaf in the manufacturing process. In 2009, the Tobacco Control Act authorized the FDA to mandate such a change, stipulating that the policy be based on scientific evidence.

Thanks, agreed...
“What a wonderful way to create a black market.”
Democrats always do things A$$ backwards. Biden go back to playing video games Mario whatever.
Ah, there’s a guy thinking ahead. LOL
And of course they’ll increase the taxes, for smoker’s health.
Fascism.
Although, its a matter of degree IMHO, rather than an all or nothing definition.
Mussolini and Hitler were way out on the continuum where Fascism and Socialism share some similarities, even if they say different things about themselves.
Beer is next!
That’s ok, Biden’s new confiscatory tax rates will make up the difference for the loss of tobacco taxes.
There you go.
They want all us folks over fifty that remember the Founders,
Founding Principles, and our nation’s history dead anyway.
You are so correct. They don’t have enough to do but they are going to fiddle around and get us in a war or two.
Hopefully you can’t get recalled.
Nice, family oriented advertising, LOL.
Well, if Obama is pulling the strings, and Obama likes menthol (as suggested by a poster who said he excluded menthol when he went after flavored tobacco), then he’ll keep it around.

But it does significantly raise Blood Pressure, as do NicoDerm Patches.
They’re worse than cigarettes.
The tobacco companies will love it...the addict will have to buy and smoke more cigs to get his nicotine fix; more profits!
>>Legalize drugs, ban tobacco. Got it.<<
Lol..ain’t that a hoot? Roll a doobie with no filter. haha
Is there ANY part of our lives the Gooberment of Demonrats won’t go into? Never mind, I just answered my own question. As a former smoker who would love to have a cig from time to time (but I won’t again) I think smokers should be able to smoke what kind of cigs they want, when they want......just not in enclosed spaces. Thought I’d never say this but the smell of cigarettes now make me sick and I realize how offensive I was all those years
Exactly. Because reducing the nicotine is just going to make smokers want more cigarettes.
I quit two years ago, but during my long tenure as a smoker, I occasionally tried to go to lighter cigs like “ultra lights.” All that did was make me want more cigarettes. The ultra-lights were like sucking air through a straw.
Yep. When I lived in the UK...the price on a pack of 20 was incredibly high (because of taxes). Used to buy rolling tobacco on the black market from the Netherlands.
Might cause people to smoke more cigarettes to make up for the lower nicotine. It’s the smoke that causes cancer and heart disease. So, I think it kind messes with people who already smoke.

Me too, so I just went back on my full flavor menthols and puffed away.......lol
