For most of the pandemic, the view south was flattering.
No matter how bad things got, Canadians were always able to console themselves with how it could have been worse. Why, we could have been living in the United States. It took only a cursory glance at Donald Trump’s America to see what worse looked like. Canadians got to revel in that most Canadian of medical conditions: congenital smugness.
Until, that is, April 9, 2021.
The date marked a first. New cases of COVID-19 in Canada, adjusted for population, for the first time exceeded those in the U.S. In a class of two, we now ranked behind the kid who spent 2020 actively trying to fail.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control recently warned Americans to “avoid all travel to Canada,” deeming it very high risk. “If you must travel to Canada, get fully vaccinated,” the CDC advised but “because of the current situation in Canada even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk.”
As nobody needs reminding, the past week has been a tough one for Canada. In much of the country, it has been the pandemic’s worst week yet.
In Ontario, intensive-care units are becoming overwhelmed. They’re treating more than twice as many COVID-19 patients as during last spring’s first wave peak, and 50 per cent more than at the top of January’s bigger second wave.
edit..
This flipped script, with Canada as the North American remedial student, is rattling.
Canada’s pandemic response has been marked by more failures than successes. Until now, looking across the border allowed Canadians to elide that truth. We could console ourselves with whataboutism: Sure, things are bad – but they could be so much worse. Worse could be seen, right next door.
The view south is no longer so comforting.

Ontario......
How ‘bout Alberta?
Do Ontario and Quebec skew the numbers for all the rest of Canada?
Do New York and California skew the numbers for all of the USA?
You are right, but that will not happen.
“I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don’t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.” —Booker T. Washington
Substitute “race” with “Wuhan Flu” and once again the wisdom of Booker T is obvious.
I will add that nobody certainly includes China with erroneous reporting to the tenth power.
The Trump administration tried. I remember Secretary of State Pompeo saying it came out of the Wuhan lab but we don’t know if it was accidental or other.
I believe they knew it was “other”
As early as...(false positive Covid-19 results)
(Risk of False Results with the Curative SARS-Cov-2 Test for COVID-19)
Who to believe?
This month Canada overtook the US in cases per 100K. And if the data is to be trusted, they’re likely to overtake the US in deaths per 100K sometime in May.

I thought that for emergency care, Canadians mostly drove to the U.S., this being a natural consequence of a socialized, single payer system. Does this not work for COVID?
Omg that meme
All of Canada is just a larger version of Michigan. Much the same kind of urban political conformity with the more distant and rural areas made up of independent-minded and somewhat skeptical yeomen who work the land and tend the forests.
Not working in Michigan, and on a larger scale, not working in Canada either.
We had a President named Trump who wasn’t perfect but accomplished a ton in four years, including rushing vaccines to the fore by pitting four drug companies against one another. We now have a fraudster for “president” who is doing his best to undo it all.
This is not true, the death rate is slightly worse for black americans and Asians do slightly better, but overall the death rate is basically proportionate to population.
Population Covid Deaths White: 60.1% 60.9% Hispanic: 18.5% 18.6% Black: 12.2% 14.6% Asian: 5.6% 3.9%If you factor out the disaster in New York and New Jersey early on, then the US looks pretty good.
“I can’t speak for Canada but the world can be absolutely certain that *nobody* will be both honest enough and brave enough to release an accurate, detailed, analysis of what *really* happened here concerning the Wuhan Flu”
India is massively underreporting theirs. Their crematormiums are running 24/7. One reporter said he saw 60+ covid bodies leave a covid only only hospital and the gov’t only said for that day 20.
A crematorium owner said pre covid he did 20 bodies per day, now it’s over 300
The Canadian/US border has been closed for over a Covid Year.
Canadians could always count on one thing: The pandemic was worse in the U.S. Not any more.
Well I hope they are wearing their masks.
Yes, that is true. However, 95% of the population live within a a couple hundred miles of the US border.
Most of the population is in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.
Nobody lives in the NW territories, Yukon, northern ONT, Quebec, and BC.
16% of the population of Canada lives in Toronto(6 out of 38 million). Over a third lives in Ontario.
When you look at those two statements from this one article you can see that the author suffers from “cognitive dissonance” where he chastised Canadians for having the same opinion that he voices later.
Journalists are not the brightest bunch.
“and also poor lifestyle choices resulting in obesity, heart disease, diabetes, drug abuse, etc”
I’ve said from the beginning every country in the world has a problem with their medical system running bankrupt due to old age and lifestyle issues and pensions plans were running or going bankrupt in every country.
What better way to get everything back in the blue by wiping out certain segements of the population. The old people and the pensioners.
If you wanted to live remotely and off the grid, Canada would seem to be ideal, except for being able to adequately protect yourself....aka no 2A....
Think of the USA with only 38 million people how much more isolated you could be if that’s what you wanted....
