For most of the pandemic, the view south was flattering.
No matter how bad things got, Canadians were always able to console themselves with how it could have been worse. Why, we could have been living in the United States. It took only a cursory glance at Donald Trump’s America to see what worse looked like. Canadians got to revel in that most Canadian of medical conditions: congenital smugness.
Until, that is, April 9, 2021.
The date marked a first. New cases of COVID-19 in Canada, adjusted for population, for the first time exceeded those in the U.S. In a class of two, we now ranked behind the kid who spent 2020 actively trying to fail.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control recently warned Americans to “avoid all travel to Canada,” deeming it very high risk. “If you must travel to Canada, get fully vaccinated,” the CDC advised but “because of the current situation in Canada even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk.”
As nobody needs reminding, the past week has been a tough one for Canada. In much of the country, it has been the pandemic’s worst week yet.
In Ontario, intensive-care units are becoming overwhelmed. They’re treating more than twice as many COVID-19 patients as during last spring’s first wave peak, and 50 per cent more than at the top of January’s bigger second wave.
edit..
This flipped script, with Canada as the North American remedial student, is rattling.
Canada’s pandemic response has been marked by more failures than successes. Until now, looking across the border allowed Canadians to elide that truth. We could console ourselves with whataboutism: Sure, things are bad – but they could be so much worse. Worse could be seen, right next door.
The view south is no longer so comforting.

Lockdowns make it worse. Get over it. Get on with your life.
It's happening though and I imagine the police will just walk away.
Once you factored out the black death rate that in turn greatly involved ignorance of proper health methods and also poor lifestyle choices resulting in obesity, heart disease, diabetes, drug abuse, etc, the American infection and death rate really was not that bad compared to Canada and other Western nations.
Agree...man the hospitals etc but this incessant crying over cases is getting us nowhere.
>> congenital smugness.
>> for the first time exceeded those in the U.S. In a class of two, we now ranked behind the kid who spent 2020 actively trying to fail.
They still have that smugness.
OMGosh.....freaky!
A couple decades ago, a Toronto radio station ran a contest. They said: Americans have their nation-wide slogan "as American as Baseball and apple pie"
The contest was to come up with a slogan: “as Canadian as….?”
The winner was: “….can be expected under the circumstances."
But this article isn’t about “cases”...
From the excerpt: “In Ontario, intensive-care units are becoming overwhelmed. They’re treating more than twice as many COVID-19 patients as during last spring’s first wave peak, and 50 per cent more than at the top of January’s bigger second wave.”
Of course, it doesn’t say how many are in ICU, how many are dying vs getting better, ICU capacity utilization, time in ICU today vs a year ago, etc. Just that ICUs are “overwhelmed.”
I can’t speak for Canada but the world can be absolutely certain that *nobody* will be both honest enough and brave enough to release an accurate, detailed, analysis of what *really* happened here concerning the Wuhan Flu. And having had a 25 year career at Harvard Medical School’s largest teaching hospital I can make that claim with confidence.
Coronavirus, the worst case of manufactured mass hysteria ever visited on humankind.
Let’s also remember that Canada has about 1/10 the number of people as the USA with a land mass about the same size...
People spent a year of their lives being so afraid of dying that they forgot to live.
The other thing to consider is that hospitals and the overall delivery of health services in Canada is governed by the politicians who wish to appear as the ultimate benefactors to all and the public employees’ unions like CUPE and OPSEU that basically run the day to day operations of health facilities. They have the clerical and janitorial staff receive benefits which are that good bit more generous than their private sector counterparts.
This system (created by Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, and Tom Kent in the 1965 to 1969 era) for all of these years failed doctors and nurses (many of whom ultimately go to the United States for better paying jobs and working conditions) and patients who also go to the United States for better and more timelier care. It likely was also constructed without visualizing a situation like the current one, therefore not surprising that it continues to fail many today.
Everyone that gets a COVID test should br required, after a time, to get an antibodies test to confirm the validity of their positive or negative test results.
This is how we can cut thru the BS, get to the real numbers and fine tune our accuracy of the diagnostic tests for BatFlu.
Well, since the Macarena anyway.
Ain’t that the truth!
From start to finish from every angle it is a witches brew of politics, public health, lies, confusion, panic, misinformation, and contradictions.
I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime. I am not talking about the “pandemic”. Viral contagions have always been a possibility, but the one thing for certain that “Covid” has shown us all is that NOTHING is above politics. Nothing.
I know people who have been vaccinated who have essentially self-quarantined in their home for an entire year as if the very air outside would kill them. They are still afraid to venture out even after the vaccine! It is crazy what the media and public officials have said.
One has to wonder what it would have all looked like if it had happened under the Obama administration.
The number of “cases” only means we are reaching - or have reached - herd immunity.
From day one, I live my life as though this was just another flu season. i.e. it doesn’t exist unless my wife or I get it. And I’ve never had a flu shot. And we put our faith in the Great Healer. He has been faithful.
20-35 year olds are getting the Wuhan Flu now, once they spread it amongst themselves for a month the numbers will drop like a pile of rocks.
