Daunte Wright called his mother moments before he was fatally shot to say police had pulled him over for an air freshener dangling from his rearview mirror, a puzzlingly innocuous offense that nevertheless escalated into a tragic encounter with police.

Wright was pulled over for expired plates and an outstanding warrant.
Really sad when a paper that so far has still hung onto a shred of integrity gets suckered into publishing BLM propaganda.
I don’t think they knew he had a warrant until after the traffic stop.
The air freshener theory was invented by the perps family.

He was pulled over because of that Christmas Tree air freshener... he was weaving all over the road trying not to hit the tree! < /sarc >

So let’s take the premise as being accurate, that he was pulled over for a dangling air freshener. If they think that is an unjust law, you get rid of that law. Saying that enforcing laws that they don’t agree with is abuse is absurd.
The dangling air freshener didn’t get him killed, his trying to resist with force his lawful arrest put him in that position. None of those events would have happened if he had simply gone to court as he was ordered to do so, that he hadn’t resisted with force his arrest, that he didn’t try to flee...
Oh, geeze, what am I doing? I’m calling for personal responsibility. Now I’ll have to go to a reeducation camp...

Everyone in Oregon is driving around with expired plates/tags.
Our DMV shut down for an entire year. Our local branch just reopened to appointment only. I’ve been driving an untitled, unlicensed car for nearly a year. Insurance and bill of sale is all I had. I have an appointment next week.
Or if that thin line is air freshener (hard to tell if it is on the inside or outside ), it certainly not big enough for someone to in another car from behind.

Running the plates will bring up any warrants also. Not necessarily this person.
If they “ran” the plates before they approached the car they probably knew about the warrants, assuming the car was registered in his name.

Police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, said Mr. Wright was stopped for
driving with expired tags. Only after he was pulled over did Officer
Kim Potter notice the air freshener dangling from the mirror — which
is also a violation, Chief Tim Gannon said.
At the time of the incident, Wright had an open arrest warrant for
an attempted armed robbery. Mr. Wright and another man were accused
of choking and robbing a woman at gunpoint in 2019, although the
case was still pending when he died.

Just recently got a handicap parking permit and it clearly stated
that do not leave the permit hanging on the mirror while driving.
Only hang it from mirror when parked.
It entirely depends on your jurisdiction. MN along with others like California, PA and Arizona all have laws against it. WA may not, we're not talking about WA.
I’m pretty sure it’s been reported they were made aware of the warrant subsequent to the initial traffic stop. In fact, on the audio subsequent to the stop, you can hear someone announce, “He’s got warrants” just before the suspect jumps into the driver’s seat.
Depends on the cop, his attitude, and interpretation of the law.
I got, fought and LOST a ticket for stuff hanging off the rearview mirror.
I also won one. With the SAME judge two years later.
