California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that he hopes all of California's schools are open for in-person learning in the fall, but stopped short of a guarantee, stating, "Mandates are not as often looked on as favorably as you might think."
Public health experts now say schools can reopen safely for in-person learning with modifications, and while Newsom has come under fire for past mandates to close businesses and require mask-wearing in public, he expressed reticence to mandate a return to in-person learning.
Some were perplexed as to why Newsom stopped short of this guarantee for the fall, a time that even the most cautious experts —including Dr. Anthony Fauci — expect a return to pre-pandemic normal.
However, it's not precisely clear what the governor would have to do to ensure schools are open in the fall. Faulconer has said that moving to suspend to collective bargaining is not needed if Newsom simply demands that schools must open, while Cox told SFGATE suspending collective bargaining may be a necessary step.
"I would have used the power of purse," he said. "It's about taking action. Jawboning is not going to work sometimes."
Another issue unions could raise is the looming question of whether schools can or should mandate COVID-19 vaccines for children. Currently, there are no vaccines approved for individuals younger than 16, but Pfizer is currently seeking emergency authorization for the 12 to 15 age range.

Lo noted that as of now, none of the COVID-19 vaccines have full FDA approval, but rather only emergency authorization.
"A mandate of something without full FDA approval raises not only ethical issues, but also legal issues as to whether that's permissible by various agencies," he said.
"The vaccines that are generally compulsory for children are measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox and pertussis," Gandhi said. "Why? Because those can lead to severe disease in children. Infections that do not cause severe disease in children are not traditionally mandated. We recommend children get HPV vaccines, but those are not widely mandated in schools. It's an amazingly good question, and with COVID, I think the question is if you're giving the vaccine to children to protect adults, can that be mandated?"

If a store owner raised the price of bottles hand sanitizer from $1 to $25 they would see their stores confiscated and they would be prosecuted for price gouging
They should be ashamed of themselves for hurting children and parents during this tragedy and taking advantage of fellow human beings
Newsome should start by arresting and prosecuting the leadership of the California Teachers Union and make an example of them
Eight people have been arrested in California for price-gouging during the coronavirus pandemic.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department says deputies have been monitoring multiple online websites in person-to-person sales where people were selling products like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, masks and gloves at exorbitant prices.
Through a sting operation, deputies, dressed in plain clothes, met the sellers, made the transactions, and then arrested them.
It is illegal in California to sell essential goods and services at excessive and unjustified prices during a declared emergency.
Pretty simple. If he crosses the teachers union they won’t fund his campaign against the recall.
