Mary Murtaugh is a recently retired nurse who says she has never been shy about promoting good health. She wasn’t shy the day she asked her favorite grocery store cashier if she’d been vaccinated.
The cashier was emphatic. No. And she wasn’t going to be. After listening to the cashier explain that she’d had a bad reaction to a flu shot, Murtaugh persisted.
“I told her that I would be worried if she contracted COVID,” Murtaugh says, and the clerk promised to think about it.
Promising to think about something is often no more than a polite deflection. But the cashier did think about it. She later reported she’d gotten two doses of the Pfizer vaccine and thanked Murtaugh for the “gentle push.”
“Sometimes,” Murtaugh says, “all you need to do is plant a seed.”
Planting seeds in people reluctant to get a vaccine can be like trying to garden in the Sahara. When I asked people on Facebook how they’ve handled vaccine resistance among their friends and family, they cataloged the pushback they’d received, a mishmash of fear and fantasy:
Needles hurt. COVID-19 is a Democratic hoax. The vaccines are a government conspiracy. They’re made of synthetic materials and we shouldn’t put synthetic materials into our bodies. The government is using vaccines to insert nanoprobes into our arms.
One woman lamented that an old high school friend wouldn’t get vaccinated because during a visit to the beauty salon she’d heard about a man in Poland who dropped dead upon receiving the shot.
It’s tempting to generalize about vaccine resisters, but they don’t all fall into neat categories. One conservative-voting man I know has gotten the vaccine, but his adult children refuse to.

I went grocery shopping this evening at the local Fry’s. Somebody forgot to put out the “masks required” sign, so I sauntered in maskless. Some young guy called me a son-of-a-bitch. He said it quietly, not to my face. (My physical appearance is not that of a wimp.) Some old fart said I need to consider other people, “Dude”. I said, “I’ve already had it, and therefore not a threat, Dude”.

yes , respect their decision, whether they get it or not-all vaccines come with some risk but like all life it is it is risk vs reward - and part of the media now pushing “look out vaccines can kill” is to keep us scared and locked down
BTW: Both President Trump and Ivanka got the vaccine in January but I understand some people who are leery of it and whose systems can’t handle a vaccine

Or the ones who make a big show of giving you a very wide berth because you don’t have a face diaper on. In the parking lot, no less. That’s happened to me twice and it cracks me up.

Something isn’t adding up in all of this. At dinner with friends this evening it was mentioned that insurance companies are not recognizing this as a true vaccine? I may be wrong on that one. Half in the group took the jab. One says she has lost much of her strength after the second shot.

Insurance companies typically will not pay out for experimental treatments. Reason being, you may die.
they likely are panicking in their minds thinking “Crap, i forgot my lysol, hand sanitizer- He’s standing so close- what am i gonna do? This man is covered in germs! What do i do? What do i do?”
liberals have succeeded in scaring the crap out of low info citizens- Even in our town that has had a total of under 100 cases all year, people nearly are in a panic when they see someone walking down the street with no mask on- it’s unreal- Most of society is a shakened, frightened mass of folks who panic now- psychiatrists must be booked solid- -

Oddly, I see more women defying the muzzle than men.

I’ve seen that too. Then there are the mothers with young children who freeze and say ‘Mommy - there’s a person’.
Don’t know what they expected to see when they left their house. I was tempted to say ‘Brains!’.
