Putin closes off access to Black Sea after Biden’s about-face on Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin took advantage of the Biden administration’s decision to abandon plans to send two destroyers to the Black Sea by closing off the Kerch Strait, connecting Crimea to Russia, to foreign warships until next fall.

The action comes as Russia warned the US on Tuesday to stay away from the area “for their own good” after the Biden administration said it was going to send two destroyers – the USS Roosevelt and the USS Donald Cook – to the Black Sea in response to Moscow’s increasing its military presence near Ukraine.

Putin will close the Kerch Strait beginning next week until October, blocking foreign warships that are conducting military exercises, including the US, the Ukraine foreign ministry said Thursday.

On the Crimean War I think that issue needs to be informed by “the harvest of the steppes”...

“For over three centuries, the military of the Crimean Khanate and the Nogai Horde conducted slave raids primarily in lands controlled by Russia[a] and Lithuania-Poland[b] as well as other territories.
Their main purpose was the capture of slaves,[1] most of whom were exported to the Ottoman slave markets in Constantinople or elsewhere in the Middle East.”

I’m sympathetic to Russia’s Crimean claims. Just wish they’d gone about it more peacefully and diplomatically.

It would definitely block access to Berdyansk and Yalta (north shore of Sea of Azov), but Odessa is on the Black Sea. However, it is about 100 km from the nearest point on the Crimean peninsula so it could easily be blocked with land based anti-ship missiles.

But they could already have been enriching it for years. Only the Taiwanese know.

Oh, they’re brave enough when they are simply using the entire power of the Govt on some lone citizen. Very brave indeed. But when faced with a real opponent they crap their pants and run.

Elections have consequences. We are about to experience some very bad ones. When stupid people get voted into power expect some epic failures and ineptitude. It remains to be seen if the country is aware enough to notice what they’ve allowed.

Sorry, I didn’t make clear that I appreciate your point.

Kerch Strait is legally international waters so the US Navy will not, and can not, stay out of it. “Freedom of the seas” is our motto.

Of course, a little temporary diplomacy may be in order...

“...and Yalta (north shore of Sea of Azov)...”

Yalta is on the Black Sea , South shore of Crimea.

Brave Sir Biden ran away,
Bravely ran away, away.
When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Biden turned about
And gallantly, he chickened out. Bravely taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Biden.

Taiwan funnels a good share of business to China through family ties. Native Taiwanese are only about 1/7th of the population.

I'm not saying that they won't invade Taiwan as they have been threatening to do for years, just that they might be shooting themselves in the foot if they do so.

The resort of Yalta (Yalta Conference fame) is indeed on the Black Sea. But about 30 miles northeast of Berdyansk is another Yalta.

The Kerch Strait controls access to the Sea of Azov, not the Black Sea. I seriously doubt we would even consider sending a warship into the Sea of Azov.

If the Ukrainian army holds they could stop at the River. If they fold up, Putin will roll all the way to the Polish Border. Question is—will Turkey help with Drones? Will Poland send troops? What will NATO do—if anything? The key is Kiev. If it falls—Ukraine will fold up.

Yes, those too. The Black Sea is no place to confront the Russians. It can only end one way.

I concur. They would be crazy (Russia and China) not to take this historic opportunity (especially since China created it with the Globalist Establishment party).

Slow Joe cain’t and ain’t gonna do a damned thing lest Pooty Poot spill the beans regarding Hunter’s “bidness dealings” and certain irregularities in the last Presidential election. Slow Joe is a wholly own subsidiary of PootyXiCo, Inc.
