Hawaii’s Gov. Details Effort to Create Vaccine Passport for Travelers to Skip Quarantine

Currently, Hawaii allows visitors to skip quarantine if they get tested before traveling at a "trusted partner" site. Those heading to Maui will also soon have to take a second test upon arrival at the airport, while Kauai offers travelers discounts to local businesses if they volunteer to take a second test three days after arriving.

It may be awhile before mainland travelers can take advantage of Hawaii's vaccine quarantine exception, but Lt. Gov. Josh Green told Hawaii News Now the state hopes to open it up to inter-island travelers by May 1, with the goal of eventually opening it to trans-Pacific travelers. The updated guidance comes nearly two months after Green first said the state was exploring the idea of vaccine passports.

Green added that while unvaccinated travelers would still be able to come with a pre-travel test, the vaccine passport "will be an easier way to travel."

why bother? Hawaii is WAY overpriced and the locals have varying degrees of hostility toward tourists. Once upon a time it was a great place to visit and even live. Anymore, not so much the case.

First they try to convince us that the “passport” will make it easier to travel, go into public offices, use transit. Then they make it impossible to go places without the “passport”.

Big question. If the vaccine is so good, and is conquering the disease, then why do we need a “passport”?

Answer: To control us, sucker!
Once they get you to put that app on your smartphone, they can monitor your movements and penalize you for going into places where they don’t want you.

Look to china, where total control is already in effect. Will happen here during a democrat administration.

The vax is the app. You will need bi yearly updates called boosters. I guess if you don’t get an update you can’t update your virus definitions and are SOL the next virus rolls into town.

Personal accountability is replaced with government mandates——all in the name “of safety”. Dangerous direction to head.

I despise the idea of vaccine "passports" as much as anyone, but an experience in my own state of Indiana has me wondering if the resistance to a passport is futile.

In my state, you "registered" for a vaccine with your DOB and a cell phone number. After my wife and I received our (J&J) vaccine, we talked on the way home.

"Can you imagine them being able to do that 10, 20 years ago when cell phones weren't as ubiquitous? What if entire families wanted to get vaccinated and not everyone had a cell phone?" I asked.

I talked to my father, who lives in a different state, and he lamented the same thing--he and my mother share a common smart phone, mostly because my mother isn't too adept at using technology.

My father tried to register them recently, but couldn't, because each person vaccinated requires a unique phone number.

If they have your phone number and you were registered and vaccinated under that number, they can already track your movements. Yes, you can get around it, but not conveniently.

Is it the same in other states?

But corporatist big businesses can, like airlines
And petty bureaucrats in cities and counties

Just let the natives re-take Hawaii as its own country again. It’s that bad.

I noticed that the one lib at work who would go to Hawaii every summer for two weeks to stay at his parents’ timeshare has not blocked out two weeks this year on our staffing calendar.

Ironically, for the first time in my working history I have blocked out two weeks, but I am going to one of the rare free states where my biggest worry will be not running into a mountain lion on hikes.

The entire last year was facilitated by capability, not out of necessity. Even only 5 years ago, it would have been impossible to cloister Americans at home for a year and shutter businesses without end. Broadband and internet commerce made the lockdown possible. In previous times of deadlier disease, life went on, while exercising elevated caution.

Hawaii is WAY overpriced

My brother is a genius when it comes to finding incredible deals on flights and accommodations. He's been to Hawaii eleven times. The last time he went he took me with him, paid the air fare and for the room -- a suite at Plantation Hale in Kauai. We went diving (twice), paddled a kayak up a river, hiked a rain forest up to a waterfall, met a BBC crew filming "Islands" at the Waimea Canyon State Park, rode in a helicopter, went horseback riding . . . We ate incredibly fresh fish every day for a week. It was a wonderful adventure.
