Pelosi’s House Democrat Margin Shrinks as Republican Representative Sworn In

House Democrats’ majority shrunk as Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) is slated to be sworn into office on Wednesday.

Letlow is joining the lower chamber after her husband, Luke Letlow, died of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus earlier this year. Julia Letlow won a special election in March.

With Letlow being sworn in, Republicans have 212 seats in the House compared with the Democrats’ 218 seats. Tie votes fail in the House, which means that Democrats cannot pass legislation if three or more of their members defect and the Republican Party fully opposes them.

And specifically, with such a narrow majority, it means that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) can only afford to lose two Democrat votes on a bill on any legislation opposed by all Democrats. It will leave Pelosi and her caucus with a small room for error on bills including President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package, another COVID-19 stimulus bill, policing bills, or gun-control legislature.

If some moderate Democrats disagree with the party on more left-wing agenda items, such items likely won’t pass.

So far, three Democrats have left the House of Representatives to join the Biden administration, including presidential adviser Cedric Richmond, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge, and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

Last week, longtime Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) died after a battle with cancer. There is one vacant seat for Republicans after Rep. Ron Wright died in February.

Four special elections are scheduled over the next several months, including three in districts that were previously held by Democrats.

Indeed. There aren't going to be many disagreements from the Dem side. She'll pull committee assignments and re-election support. Remember, in the House, members are only a few months away from thinking about the next election, as their terms are only two years.

I keep reading that last term 10 Dems voted against her
being speaker. Did she kill them and store their bodies
in her $25,000 freeZER?

"Holding on to power by a mere thread."

Sadly, typical Democrat party discipline is better than Republicans'.
They seem more likely to peel off some of our people than we are to get any of theirs -- dare we mention some names?

You know, I can remember a time when the opposite was true -- years ago Republicans were more disciplined, Democrats more likely to careen off their reservation.
Time will tell, they might just surprise us...

What is the current status of the one they are trying to not seat because she only won by 6 votes? Or was this her?

“What is the current status of the one they are trying to not seat because she only won by 6 votes? Or was this her?”

That was the seat in Iowa. That was resolved. Nancy gave up the fight to steal that seat. My guess is that she wanted to steal the seat because she knew that Alcee Hastings was close to death (he died last week).

If the GOP had brains they would be all over the few dozen Red districts with money and conservative candidates attacking the Dems.

Four special elections are scheduled over the next several months, including three in districts that were previously held by Democrats.

According to the article, these are:

1. Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District April 24

This is a waste, as the two candidates who are facing off in the district—which has been solidly Democrat for years—are both Democrat candidates.

2. May 1, a special election will be held in Texas’ 6th Congressional District

According to Ballotpedia, there are ten Democrat candidates for this seat and no Republicans. What is that about? According to Ballotpedia, all three Republicans are withdrawn or disqualified. What?

Texas 6th Congressional District special election

3. June 1, a special election will be held for the 1st Congressional District in New Mexico.

Six candidates are running in a special election June 1, including Republican state Sen. Mark Moores. About Mark Moores: Mark Moores Ballotpedia

Campaign donatation website: Winred Mark Moores

4. Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, will not be held until Nov. 2. There's not much information about this yet.

In sum, it appears that there is one pick-up chance out of the three near-term special elections. If you want to contribute to that effort, use the Mark Moores link above – probably contributions after, say, May 10 won't be useable in a practical way.

It gives individual democrats leverage to demand extra goodies for their districts in any spending bills.

I thought that Susan Wright was still running in the special election in the 6th in Texas.

There are more than enough RINOs to keep the game interesting. Only problem for them is that RINOs are not a protected species any more. They are like wild bore, a pest that you can take at will and there is no bag limit.

It appears that you are right. I'll have to start relying less on Ballotpedia.

This article says there are ten D's and eleven R's running:
Susan Wright is expected to garner a plurality of the vote in the May 1 election
