Former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory on Wednesday announced he'll run for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina, shaking up the calculus in the expanding field to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Burr with the entrance of a veteran of statewide politics.
McCrory, who served as governor for four years through 2016, revealed his plans on his morning radio show in Charlotte, where he also served a record 14 years as mayor. McCrory had said in late 2019 that he would strongly consider a Senate bid in 2022. He has quietly built a team of experienced consultants and fundraisers.
“I'm in,” he told listeners on WBT radio, citing his long record of public service. “I'm going to run for the U.S. Senate because I'm simply the best for the job of all the candidates that are considering to run ... and if I wasn't I wouldn't run.”

We just might have to go with him. Let Trump sort it out.
Because electing Assistant Democrats has worked out so well for us in the past........./s
“Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of Trump and a North Carolina native, also are considering runs for the Republican nomination.”
Lara over a RINO anytime.
When it comes down to the actual vote, it’s no contest between McCrory and whomever the Dems nominate - you have to vote for McCrory.
But there’s a nomination process first. What I know of McCrory and Lt. Gov. Robinson, I’ll go with Robinson.
Robinson is a fighter, and will refuse to allow the left to characterize him - or to character-assassinate him. I also see Robinson as less likely to compromise his conservatism to get to a consensus with the Dems.
Don’t get me wrong. I think McCrory is a great guy, is honest, and takes the mantle of “Public Servant” seriously. He is there to “serve” the public, not personally enrich himself or seek power for power’s sake.
His downfall in this political climate is that he still wants to break bread with Democrats, and the Democrat party. If he were to win the GOP nomination, I think he would be shocked how quickly his “friends on the other side” turned on him viciously, calling him a racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ, yada, yada, yada. In other words, I think he might be too nice and too naive to ultimately win the seat, or to effectively fill it.
(full disclosure: I live in Charlotte, NC - he was both my Mayor & my Governor. I voted for him every time he ran.)
I don't think she runs and I would hope McCrory would have had a courtesy call with Trump.
Oh, go away, McCrory.
