Bans On High Capacity Magazines For Guns Fail At Legislature
Honolulu Civil Beat ^ | April 9, 2021 | Blaze Lovell

Some of the more restrictive measures to further tighten Hawaii’s already stringent gun laws are among dozens of bills failing to pass as the Legislature gets ready to wrap business in three weeks.

Bills that would have banned rifle magazines greater than 10 rounds and any gun that could fire 50-caliber rounds or more have stalled for this legislative session.

Most police reform measures have also failed this session, as have efforts to legalize recreational use of marijuana.

Even more bills could die between now and April 29, the day lawmakers are scheduled to adjourn the 2021 session.

The gun measures this year faced heavy opposition from local activists. Most vocal has been the Hawaii Firearms Coalition, which mobilized hundreds of its members to submit testimony to lawmakers opposing a variety of measures.

Senate Bill 301 would ban 10-round magazines while Senate Bill 307 would eliminate any firearm capable of shooting a 50-caliber round.

Both bills had a single referral to Rep. Mark Nakashima’s Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs Committee but failed to get a hearing by a legislative deadline Friday afternoon.

Ammo for .50s is expensive. How many folks can afford to feed even own a bolt action Barrett? Is this really a problem? Are people doing drive bys with .50's? Maybe Desert Eagles? HI is weird.

Looks like success for Second Amendment supporters.

Hawaii is amazingly top-heavy in government.

Perhaps it comes from being a kingdom so long before becoming a republic.

It is not about pragmatic issues.

It is about establishing the principle the state can arbitrarily restrict your rights.

The principle they hold to is they decide what you "need".

You do not get to decide what you "need".

Totally agree. I just have to laugh at the state's focus on .50s. It's like "We the demoncrap assembly are going require universal background checks on sales of guns, and also, a picture ID that proves that you aren't the boogieman. The literal boogieman."

Excellent. We The People can still influence outcomes even in a place like Hawaii. The Rats are overreaching everywhere.

I see they have finally come out after the single shot 50 rd rifles now. Rest assured if they get a ban on such rifles there are more on their “To be banned” list than they are telling you.

"Most police reform measures have also failed this session, as have efforts to legalize recreational use of marijuana."

So they tried to further Calirado-ize Hawaii in regards to drugs and gun control and failed this time.

Democrats have been talking about banning .50 cal. rifles nationally, too. It’s a police state concern in regards to vehicles. Their desire to make rifles less ergonomic and less accurate is also a police state concern.

Would the .50+ ban include muzzleloaders? Many black powder guns are over .50 caliber.

It all depends on the legislation.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not.

Commirado high capacity magazine laws are so poorly written to be unenforceable. About 2.7 million background checks last month and empty ammo shelves and gun racks at store tell the story. Many took stimulus checks to buy guns and ammo.

We don't need gun control - we need criminal control...

we need criminal control...

Problem is too many criminals are part of or work for the government.

We The People can still influence outcomes even in a place like Hawaii.

In Hawaii it's easy. Virtually anyone in government can be bought or blackmailed.
