Nearly 40% of Marines have declined Covid-19 vaccine

Nearly 40% of US Marines are declining Covid-19 vaccinations, according to data provided to CNN on Friday by the service, the first branch to disclose service-wide numbers on acceptance and declination.

As of Thursday, approximately 75,500 Marines have received vaccines, including fully vaccinated and partially vaccinated service men and women. About 48,000 Marines have chosen not to receive vaccines, for a declination rate of 38.9%.

CNN has reached out to the other services for acceptance and declination rates.

The corresponding acceptance rate for vaccinations among Marines -- 61.1% -- is not far off the military estimate of two-thirds, or about 66%. Another 102,000 Marines have not yet been offered the vaccines. The total number of Marines includes active-duty, reserves and Individual Mobilization Augmentee Marines.

The declination rate at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, one of the prominent Marine Corps bases, was far higher, at 57%, according to another set of data provided to CNN. Of 26,400 Marines who have been offered vaccinations, 15,100 have chosen not to receive them, a number that includes both II Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Installation East -- Camp Lejeune. Another 11,500 active-duty Marines are scheduled to be offered the vaccines.

"We fully understand that widespread acceptance of the Covid-19 vaccine provides us with the best means to defeat the pandemic. The key to addressing the pandemic is building vaccine confidence," Marine Corps spokeswoman Col. Kelly Frushour told CNN in a statement.

Frushour said there are a number of potential reasons a Marine may choose not to receive a vaccine, including allowing others to receive it first, waiting until it becomes mandatory, getting it through other channels or being allergic to the vaccine.

"Service members who decline one day can change their mind and become vaccinated when next the opportunity presents itself," she said.

Well Texas NG finally got around to asking us if we want to volunteer to be guinea pigs for these. My platoon had two guys out of 14 choose the jab. Pretty sure the rest of the Company/Battalion was about the same percentage, maayybe slightly higher. ~86% denial rate.

Cause Marines aren't known for being smart. Although 40% is a rather high number for them!

Would love to see a breakdown of numbers that included vaccination rates by rank.

Also combat arms vs support MOS rates.

RE: Im suprised they were given a choice.

THE MILITARY CANNOT MAKE THE COVID VACCINE MANDATORY NOW.

Across the Armed Forces, they knew if vaccination was mandatory they would see a huge amount of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines opt out and non re-enlistment numbers would skyrocket

The prediction was over 50% would leave.

Come on... they are most definitely NOT “pussies”. Like many in the US military, most marines are self-sacrificing when appropriate.

And this makes me feel good about our young, healthy, robust marines. I would not be surprised if many of them know that the COVID-19 virus is minimally dangerous to them and that there are millions of older, less healthy Americans struggling to get appointments. And the CHOSE to wait.

Exactly. In addition to that, I’ve spent a lot of time translating pharma Phase II and III testing for FDA compliance and the scrutiny over ONE adverse event not explainable by a health problem usually shuts them down immediately.

Having 30 and 20-somethings adversely affected by blood clotting would be grounds for rejection of most pre-production pharma research medicines. Even just one.

Maybe they’re worried about birth defects happening to their future children if the father’s DNA has been altered?
