Minutes after State Police officer Darian Jarrott pulled over Omar Cueva along Interstate 10 east of Deming, he noticed a firearm in the truck.
“Do you mind if I take it off you, for my safety?” Jarrott asks through the passenger side window.
The officer never got the chance.
As the two men walk to the back of the truck, Cueva raises the rifle and shoots an unsuspecting Jarrott. The officer falls to the ground, reaching for his gun, and Cueva moves around the truck, shooting him several more times.
Cueva puts the rifle to the back of Jarrott’s head and fires once more before he jumps into the truck and speeds off down the highway.
On Friday State Police released lapel and dash cam footage and details of the Feb. 4 fatal shooting of the 28-year-old Lordsburg native, a father of three who had a fourth child on the way.
The man who shot him, 39-year-old Cueva, was killed in a gunfight with authorities in Las Cruces soon after. Jarrott was the first New Mexico State Police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in more than 30 years.
The dash camera footage shows the two men walk to the back of the truck, Cueva holding an AR-15 style rifle in one hand and what looks like a walkie-talkie or police scanner in the other.
Without warning Cueva raises the rifle and opens fire, shooting Jarrot multiple times as vehicles drive by on the highway.
State Police spokesman Ray Wilson said State Police officers Lionel Palomares and Sonny Montes caught up to Cueva headed east on I-10 and Cueva pulled over and fired at the officers. Both officers fired back at Cueva who got back into the truck and continued east.

I am sick to my stomach over these but they have to be mandatory for all police to use as training and inexplicably these same brutal murders of law enforcement still happen.
I cannot believe that the officer allowed him to touch the weapon. Maybe in NM it’s not unusual to encounter displayed weapons in a traffic stop, but I don’t understand why the casual response - didn’t the officer see him leave the vehicle with the rifle? For that matter, why let him exit the vehicle at all?
So sad and shocking to know there are such animals in the world.
Well this particular one is no longer with us.
Good thing we let how many folks out of prison in the last 3 or 4 years on “just drug” charges.
I couldn’t see anything except a paywall.
It seems like some rookie ____ but he was sworn in almost 6 years ago. That was AFU.
“Do you mind if I take it off you, for my safety?”

(uh this guy is an ex-con with a possibly illegal firearm so lets be reeeeeal careful....)
“Why yes, I DO mind - for any reason.”

(is this guy stupid as a radioactive jock-strap or what, and wants me to give him my rifle for HIS safety?)
I grew up in Cop World.
95% of them are as stupid as rocks.
I can’t believe it either. Who’s training these people?

I have 2 nephews who were in the NM State Police. Based on what they told me about their training and the fact that 1 officer can be the only “law” for hundreds of square miles I find this situation incomprehensible.
I’m on PC and there is no paywall
No subscription.
Criminals would behave a lot differently if they knew that in addition to the officer walking up to their car, there was another behind them manning the .50 caliber “Ma Deuce” through the roof hatch or drop down windshield of the patrol car.
Damn, I got a paywall, too.
Wow, that was quick.
