Anti-depressant...check!

New research published in the British Journal of Pharmacology indicates that two currently available medications — an antifungal drug and an antidepressant — can effectively inhibit the virus that causes COVID-19 in laboratory cells.
Investigators found that the antifungal itraconazole and the antidepressant fluoxetine each blocked the production of infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus in cell culture lab tests. When either drug was used in combination with the antiviral drug remdesiver, the combination showed synergistic effects and inhibited the production of SARS-CoV-2 by more than 90%.
“Preventive vaccination and therapeutic medicines against COVID-19 are both required to effectively combat pandemics caused by emerging zoonotic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2,” said senior author Ursula Rescher, PhD, of the University of Muenster, in Germany.

Abstract
Background and Purpose
The SARS‐COV‐2 pandemic and the global spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) urgently call for efficient and safe antiviral treatment strategies. A straightforward approach to speed up drug development at lower costs is drug repurposing. Here, we investigated the therapeutic potential of targeting the interface of SARS CoV‐2 with the host via repurposing of clinically licensed drugs and evaluated their use in combinatory treatments with virus‐ and host‐directed drugs in vitro.
Experimental Approach We tested the antiviral potential of the antifungal itraconazole and the antidepressant fluoxetine on the production of infectious SARS‐CoV‐2 particles in the polarized Calu‐3 cell culture model and evaluated the added benefit of a combinatory use of these host‐directed drugs with the direct acting antiviral remdesivir, an inhibitor of viral RNA polymerase.
Key Results
Drug treatments were well‐tolerated and potently impaired viral replication. Importantly, both itraconazole–remdesivir and fluoxetine–remdesivir combinations inhibited the production of infectious SARS‐CoV‐2 particles > 90% and displayed synergistic effects, as determined in commonly used reference models for drug interaction.
Conclusion and Implications
Itraconazole–remdesivir and fluoxetine–remdesivir combinations are promising starting points for therapeutic options to control SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and severe progression of COVID‐19.

Instead of looking for all these drugs that ‘might work’, why not take the vaccine which we know does work?

Oral anti-fungals are hard on the body.
Not something I’d want to take casually as a preventative.
I say we look for every treatment possibility.
If the vaccines encounter a variant they don’t work against, we’ll have some backup power.

Viruses mutate. Our immune systems adapt. The elderly, the infirm, and the immunocompromised are the ones who need protecting, but those drugs are very damaging to the liver.
Is your tag line ironic in this instance? We “know” it works? It’s still experimental and data is still being compiled. If it was known to be effective and safe, it wouldn’t still be experimental.
I agree. I wouldn't use anti-fungals lightly. Not sure about the anti-depressant. Might change my mind after using them. LOL

I’m trying to figure out how serotonin increase can decrease virus replication.
Maybe laughter is the best medicine.
I’m sticking with the Vitamin D3, etc. It’s worked for me, so far!
It’s curious that so many anti-fungal and anti-parasite drugs appear to work against a virus.
But that would stop Fauci from getting his cut.
