Japan has been building a military in the past 10 years. Their Navy is as good or better then China. It's clearly a deterrent. Japan owns a lot of Taiwan. The costs will have to be weighed at the time.

That is where Taiwan’s air force and anti-aircraft capabilities come into play. Taiwan has Patriot and indigenously-produced SAM and ABM systems. Moreover, the ROCAF has both F-16s and an an indigenously-developed fighter that is comparable to the F-16.
