One in three COVID-19 survivors in a study of more than 230,000 mostly American patients were diagnosed with a brain or psychiatric disorder within six months, suggesting the pandemic could lead to a wave of mental and neurological problems, scientists said on Tuesday.
Researchers who conducted the analysis said it was not clear how the virus was linked to psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression, but that these were the most common diagnoses among the 14 disorders they looked at.
Post-COVID cases of stroke, dementia and other neurological disorders were rarer, the researchers said, but were still significant, especially in those who had severe COVID-19.
"Our results indicate that brain diseases and psychiatric disorders are more common after COVID-19 than after flu or other respiratory infections," said Max Taquet, a psychiatrist at Britain's Oxford University, who co-led the work.
The study was not able to determine the biological or psychological mechanisms involved, he said, but urgent research is needed to identify these "with a view to preventing or treating them".
Health experts are increasingly concerned by evidence of higher risks of brain and mental health disorders among COVID-19 survivors. A previous study by the same researchers found last year that 20% of COVID-19 survivors were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder within three months.
The new findings, published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal, analysed health records of 236,379 COVID-19 patients, mostly from the United States, and found 34% had been diagnosed with neurological or psychiatric illnesses within six months.

Thank you. I get plenty of zinc. For any readers who are looking, zinc and copper are also in some multivitamin supplements for aging eyes.
Still have very little sense of smell 4 months later. Took zinc and quercitin the entire time I had covid.
Believe there are other lingering residual affects too.
Did you take Vitamin D?
That's where I'd place my bet.
Hm. If took no antibiotic as well, or not megadosing vitamin C, (10+G/Day) possibly a sinus infection?
Keep running into friends and relatives who all of a sudden have bacterial pneumonia requiring 2 to three rounds of antibiotics after either covid -that I did not know about until afterwards- or for no known reason.
In the original Zelenko protocol of HCQ/Zinc/Zithromax antibiotic, it was not clear why the antibiotic was added since this was a virus being fought.
The Zinc inhibits viral replication, but needs an “ionophore” (HCQ or Quercitin or Ivermectin) to get said zinc into the virus to stop it.
Apparently, Zithromax (and possibly others) has anti-inflammatory qualities as well as being used to stop lung infection from sinus matter sliding down into the lungs during illness.
These are the mental meanderings. What comes to mind is maybe continuing quercitin and zinc may help and also get checked for a deep sinus infection.

Yes, took vitamins D&C, ivermectin along with the zinc and quercitin. Also took an antibiotic the 2nd week when lungs were very congested. Didn’t cough much, but there was a lot of junk in them and low O2 saturation.
Gas doc, I signed in to ask your opinion about the need for “booster” vaccine shots for those who have had covid. As I mentioned in Jan, a beloved survived at 87 with COPD thanks to Eli Lily, great inpt care, and the will to fight. Now much recovered with just a bit more reliance on O2 than before.
He is being told to get a booster at 3 months post-recovery. As Jewbacca says, it defies common sense, at least to me.
The corollary question to that is “will he or myself now Moderna vaccinated, “get” Covid again? Or are the Genome studies telling you docs accurate news about new variations against an immune system primed to fight the mutated Covid19 virus?
I continue to appreciate your willingness to keep opinion and science separate on this forum.
Best wishes to you both,
The Westerner
