Polish Hospitals Struggling Amid Virus Surge in EU

BOCHNIA, Poland (AP) – Polish hospitals struggled over the Easter weekend with a massive number of people infected with COVID-19 following a huge surge in infections across Central and Eastern Europe in recent weeks.

Tougher new pandemic restrictions were ordered in Poland for a two-week period surrounding Easter in order to slow down the infection rate. The country hit new records of over 35,000 daily infections on two recent days, and deaths have been in the hundreds each day.

Thanks for the report.
Hadn’t Poland avoided lockdowns until now?

I’m against lockdowns unless it’s done to protect the hospitals from being over whelmed.
But then the high social/economic cost of lockdowns is worth it.

We had 2 lockdown.

First in April 2020. That resulted in us getting very low rates right until September.

The government got complacent and didn’t expand hospital bed capacity.

People got complacent in the holidays and thought it was all a hoax as we were barely affected.

Our hospitals were not maxed out until 29 March. But my wife’s cousin who was a nurse in a covid ward told us of the wasted time and non expansion of bed capacity.

Thanks, saw your post above afterwards.

I haven’t seen anything that proves masking helps- or that it doesn’t.
Lockdowns definitely work but at a high cost.

I hate that people are just sent home instead of given some treatment- no matter how speculative- as long as it’s safe.

Well, good luck to you all. Good luck seems to be the most important factor...

Hmm... since making was used in conjunction with lockdowns in Poland it is difficult to highlight if either worked would have worked in isolation or not.

Tough to get good info on anything to do with covid.

Lockdowns: Pretty indisputable that if one has half as many contacts (or whatever proportion the lockdown reduced contact) then one has half as much of a chance of being infected.
Of course what difference any particular lockdown made in contacts depends on how well it was followed.
But they’re very expensive.

The country that was far, far more successful than any other fighting the covid was Taiwan.
And that’s because they cut off China contact early and strictly and isolated any cases that had managed to come in.

I heard today that Krzysztof Krawczyk passed away. I don’t know if you were familiar with him, but he was a giant of Polish music, and I think the death was COVID related.

Note that the lockdown was recently imposed and we will see the results only in mid April

Is this your first lockdown?

No, the third.

The first was last March-April. That resulted in Poland having very few cases last spring-summer and our hospital beds not being overwhelmed

The second was at the end of November - to combat the surge we got from mid-October. That dropped the number of cases and we had a calm Christmas.

The problem was that Poland didn’t really get hit that hard until just now. The virus is just going to find its way and sneak up on you unless you manage to vaccinate everybody first.

Thank you.

Quite frankly, I, personally, am not scared. I put my trust in God - if I’m going to die a physical death so be it. I’m not going to go out looking for it, but I’m more concerned about not dying the spiritual death.

Churches here have not been any center of virus spread (otherwise it would be in the leftist news) - so we continue with our Divine Liturgy and bible study groups in the Church.

Our neighbour is not religious, so it seems to be worrying him more.

Thank you for your prayers.

Is this the first big surge that you know of in Poland?

Any information on which age groups have been hit the hardest both in terms of “infection numbers” and in “deaths”?

Is the US doing anything to help Poland?

So the corrupt press is the same the world over? Gads, that's depressing. I thought that anti-Christian stuff was mainly in the United States. Hang in there... Again, you and yours are in my prayers.

The anti-Christian stuff is worldwide. In India the press is also anti-Hindu. Though in Muslim countries the press is not anti Islam. They’re probably too afraid to be.

The first surge that is getting close to unmanageable because of lack of hospital beds.

That lack of hospital beds is due to government and public complacency in summer. We got through the first wave unscathed and should have used the time to prepare for the next. But we didn’t.

Average age is over 70

It’s the same as the usa, older folks are higher at risk. Fat people are higher at risk. Men are higher at risk. Those with respiratory problems are higher at risk.

So a fat 75 year old man with diabetes and respiratory problems is sure to die.

Another friend got the virus in December. He has hereditary diabetes, but is slim and relatively sporty. He was just weak for a day, then recovered.

No, the USA can’t help Poland. Poles need to do it. And warmer weather is around the corner.

I thought more about what MrSmith said and concur that he is correct and that I with regards to masks above was wrong - even in my response to you AppyPappy.

When we implemented sharp lockdowns, the results were seen in 2 weeks and the lockdowns worked — just as MrSmith said they hurt restaurants and coffee shops (but eating out is not the norm in Poland so we have far fewer restaurants).

But MrSmith brought out a point about masks. And on reflection I agree with you - the masks didn’t do anything. My neighbours were strict about masking but still got it - and another friend was not strict about masking but got it. The difference was the interactions with people (lockdown related).

So you guys are right - based on the actual situation here in Warsaw - masks by themselves are not a solution. Lockdowns by themselves are a solution. Masks may help a little bit (unproven) but they aren’t a solution in themselves.

The masks gave people a false sense of security. At the university here, college students will wear the mask religiously but go to parties where they get infected. The focus on masking ended up being harmful. The mask represents obedience, even when you aren’t being obedient about social distancing. Social distancing is why I didn’t get Covid. I stayed away from everyone.
