BOCHNIA, Poland (AP) – Polish hospitals struggled over the Easter weekend with a massive number of people infected with COVID-19 following a huge surge in infections across Central and Eastern Europe in recent weeks.
Tougher new pandemic restrictions were ordered in Poland for a two-week period surrounding Easter in order to slow down the infection rate. The country hit new records of over 35,000 daily infections on two recent days, and deaths have been in the hundreds each day.

I thought surge was deemed a naughty word.
Locking down seems to be such a good idea. I mean look, it’s been a year and look how far it’s gotten us.
Looks like “infection” is the new “case”.
So I need to adjust my question thusly:
“Define ‘infection’.”
Just give ‘em ivermectin. They’ll be fine as long as they are not really sick.
I’m here in Warsaw.
There is a massive surge. A neighbour got it bad and couldn’t be hospitalized due to lack of beds. He’s at home with fluctuating blood pressure and temperatures and no hospital beds.
It is bad.
Btw we have s mixed public and private healthcare.
The failure is the massive numbers that have overwhelmed BOTH public and private.
Note that the lockdown was recently imposed and we will see the results only in mid April
Poland and Czech republic were one of the most successful countries to contain the virus so far. So they got it now! Looks like at the end, everybody will have about the same infection rate - some got it sooner, some later.
Plus, there is a general shortage of vaccines in EU. EU somehow decided to order them together as EU, and really botched it! I do not know the details, but everybody there claims to be a total disaster!
Luckily, we had president Trump, who really should be given some award for saving humanity from the virus.
We went into lockdown last year from mid march to mid April. It worked. We had few cases and even fewer deaths.
The restrictions were lifted in April, but people went overboard during the holidays and cases surged from middle October and died before Christmas as there was a second 3 week lockdown at the end o November.
But then they were removed and we’ve had a third wave since March. Third lockdown implemented since mid march
How many deaths is the key question?
We were successful as everyone was scared shirtless. There were lockdown but nowhere as severe as the usa or Italy or UK. But people were very strict to themselves.
Then when we got out practically unscathed, people loosened up too much and many became hard core sceptics.
A few 100 a day, rising to a thousand. Massive for Poland. From march to july 2020 we had less than 100 in total. Now we get that per day.
How many deaths?
Cases vs Deaths are two different things.
So, "two weeks to flatten the curve"? Why does that sound familiar?
When are the masks going to start working?
Cases v deaths are two different things - but it’s become solely about hospital bed capacity in the UK and most of the EU.
Nowhere has hospital capacity been increased in the past year. In fact in the UK available beds are down 10% on pre-plague figures to create “social distancing” in hospital wards.
The UKs overall increased number of deaths (all causes on a 5-year moving average) was just 7% up to the year ended 2021-02-28. We have paid an almighty price for a small uptick in deaths - almost all among a very narrow cohort.
In 30 minutes our Prime Minister will be outlining the next steps for England. They had better be good, because with all the over 50s vaccinated now, we need to get back to normal by 2021-06-20 as previously promised. Otherwise vaccines will be pointless - a point on which the rest of Europe looks upon the UK for the direction of travel.
Are you talking deaths? The numbers I look at haven’t gone over 600 but for a few times. Never over a thousand. I’m looking to return to Poznan soon but I keep getting delayed.
Two weeks to flatten the curve...nonsense. There is no justification for the lockdown.
It worked in March and in December
The masks worked in April and may when we had low numbers of cases. The masks worked at the start of December, bringing cases down
