South Dakota governor Kristi Noem transitioned — at sprinting speed — from Miss Thing to Miss Nothing. On March 8, Gov. Noem expressed joy over a bill passed by the South Dakota Legislature, which would have banned males from women's sports.
An overdue wakeup call
Whether you want to call it "pro-family" or "socially conservative policy," there exist political positions based on preserving the family unit of mother, father, and child. In earlier decades, the main threats to family were abortion, divorce, and unwed parenthood, so pro-family conservatives focused on respect for life and marriage. Now the main things threatening the mother-father-child unit deal with sexual orientation and biological sex.
Then, on March 19, she "returned" the text to the Legislature requesting changes that undid the basic purpose of the bill. Her office issued a Shakespearean press release (except far less interesting than Hamlet's soliloquies), doddering to explain her veto.
Life is short, and word limits are tight, so let's not scan the infamous press release. However it's couched, she sank a key bill opposing the imposition of transgenderism on people whom it could harm.
And the conservative world finally erupted.
The homeschooled right cried out, "Et tu, Regina Dakotae Meridianae? You on whom we hung all our hopes for a Trumpian comeback?"
As a pro-family activist who has gotten mobbed and run out of multiple jobs for defending functional heterosexuality against its many detractors, I can understand why everyone is outraged. But I am not outraged. I would like to explain why this is good.

The Transgender Turn is that turn at Le Mans where all the French drivers crash.
What the Hell kind of excuse is this? Go easy on her she was the one stuck holding the back?
How about we finally wake up and start firing those that take our money and votes and then sell us out!
back = bag
Go easy on her she was the one stuck holding the bag?
Yeh, she lost me. As my early pick for the GOP 2024 ticket I had DeSantis as President and her as Vice President. But sadly, no more. Gotta find a different VP candidate...
Steve Deace roasted her over this on his radio show the other day.
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Bl...
There is one particular reason Trump won the presidency twice, the second time in a landslide.
We never had to read these BS headlines. GWB is doing great things for the pro life movement by waiting two weeks to come up with a decision on stem cell research that any 6th grade kid with a shred of decency could say no to on a playground at lunch At the line of scrimmage waiting for the center to pass.
We are quite and way done with this. Never to return
Kristi noem seemed like a lightweight which would disqualify her. Now she has removed any and all doubt.
January 15 - American Thinker filled its adult diaper and crawdadded in front of the Lefties.
I don't need any advice from these particular pukes on Kristi Noem.
I sure see a lot of ink on FR about Noem's decisions these days...
How did this country survive over 200 years without trannies in sports?
Social conservatives have long been the red-headed stepchildren of the Republican Party. In the past it was mainly because of the Rockefeller wing of the Party. In recent years many in the populist movement have joined arms against them as well. Social conservatives still have some support in the conservative wing of the Party, but a growing number of so-called “conservatives” oppose them as well. The trend is not our friend.
But this is my hill to die on. I will not change. I will not yield. Not though all the stars fall from the heavens and all the mountains dissolve into the sea. Never.
Never.
The writer of the AT article is earnest but confused.
I am a conservative. I don’t believe what consenting adults do is my business. I’d prefer to keep such things private.
I don’t just tolerate gay conservatives; I welcome them. The values we hold mutually are the key toward returning this Nation to fiscal solvency, a small central Government, a return to individual freedoms enshrined at our founding, they share a belief in individual responsibility. Conservatives want all people to have the opportunity to work for their dreams and fight to make that happen. The left want to control everyone and deny them any freedom of action.
Personal beliefs are a different arena. The nuclear family is part of conservatism because it gives children the best chance of success and makes our Nation stronger as does self sufficiency, willingness to work & tenacity.
The fact that there are differences between men & women that cannot be removed by surgical or drug therapy is incontrovertible. When individual rights are respected the right of a man who calls himself a woman (or the reverse) does not trump the rights of other individuals to compete against only people of the same genetic sex, shower and change in unisex facilities or to speak their own thoughts aloud.
Very true. I lost all respect for AT at that point. I no longer bother to comment, one would need to join a new platform even to see comments on the articles. Perhaps they could not have survived but they certainly were quick to capitulate.
.........the last and only woman on the conservative side of the fence who turned out in the end NOT to be a “lightweight” was Maggie Thatcher.
Correct me if I’m wrong. If I forgot some deserving “conservative” woman of prominence I would love to know it.
I love Katie Hopkins but few have even heard of her. I like Candace but she’s waaayyyy to young to trust. And so on......
I don’t know of any conservative women that don’t cave Monica Crowley? I have to think. Bachman?
How about you name one “conservative” man besides trump who hasn’t caved.
It’s a state law. Not national. Also the bullies on this board need to remember that. South Dakota voters have weighed in. Your voice doesn’t count there.
This singular piece of legislation as it is now written protects high schools. Watch an learn.......most here don’t have a clue what the legal issues are.....
How’s we survive without all these really useless sports?
Yep. Christi was on Tucker Carlson’s show and explained the veto.
You seem to be giving too much weight to the so-called conservative establishment. Trump exposed them as nothing more than mainline Chamber of Commerce GOPe wearing different stripes. Noem is firmly in that camp. A self interested climber and conservative for pay. When it was a time for choosing she listened to the CoC and not the conservative sponsors of the bill.
Spot-on. While we're at it, we should start de-funding those "pro-family" organizations that have been selling us out too. I think that was also the author's point.
This was a damn' good read, IMO. I learned a few things.
