Seven people have died from unusual blood clots after getting the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the UK, the medicines regulator has confirmed to the BBC.
In total, 30 people out of 18 million vaccinated by 24 March had these clots.
It is still not clear if they are just a coincidence or a genuine side effect of the vaccine.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency says the benefits continue to outweigh any risk.
However, concern has led to other countries including Germany, France, the Netherlands and Canada to restrict the vaccine's use only to older people.
The data released by the MHRA on Friday showed 22 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) which is a type of blood clot in the brain.
These were accompanied by low levels of platelets, which help form blood clots, in the body. The MHRA also found other clotting problems alongside low platelet levels in eight people.
Now the MHRA has confirmed, in an email to the BBC, that "sadly seven have died".
Dr June Raine, the chief executive of the MHRA, said: "The benefits… in preventing Covid-19 infection and its complications continue to outweigh any risks and the public should continue to get their vaccine when invited to do so."

Covid has, without a doubt, caused more fatal blood clots. Coagulopathy, as it is called, is a common finding of severe Covid. I think I probably had the first Covid patient in my hospital. he had atypical pneumonia, a stroke, a heart attack and some kind of bizarre disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). We see elevated d Dimers and low platelet counts and signs of this atypical DIC all the time. I only bother to mention it because it seems odd that all of these vaccine associated deaths appear to have some kind of an underlying coagulopathy as well.

OK, one case is tragedy enough. But is that enough to ban the vaccine?
I believe they should determine WHAT TYPE of people ( e.g. their conditions, their physical health, etc. ) are NOT SUITABLE for AstraZeneca’s vaccine.

Maybe. I tried to sort it all out a while back and I came up with “antibody induced platelet desialylation” and then I stopped looking because it was getting beyond my ken. It seems like some people may be predisposed to having this reaction since not everyone is having it. That’s what I think though. yep.

The group, which includes Andreas Greinacher, MD, of the Medical University of Greifswald in Germany, who is well known in the field, issued a statement about their preliminary data (though no formal publication or preprint manuscript). The statement offers guidance on diagnosing and treating this condition if it develops after the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Heparin platelet 4 antibody causes heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), in which heparin paradoxically activates platelets, leading to platelet depletion and clotting. HIT is a well-known but rare complication of heparin use that develops in about 1%-2% of patients. Some patients who have never been exposed to heparin can also have this autoantibody.”
