GOP has unique edge in Newsom recall election — a lower bar to success

Even before the attempt to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom officially qualifies for the ballot, Republicans hoping to replace him are in full campaign mode.

“It’s perhaps the one shot Republicans actually have of winning the governorship in a while because of the structure of the recall,” said Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College.

Though the bar is lower, winning the recall election is still complicated. A Republican candidate needs more than 50% of those casting ballots to vote to oust Newsom, and must consolidate the support of GOP voters while reaching out to center-left independents and Democrats.

In a recall election, however, the replacement could get picked with far less than 50% of the vote. That’s because it’s a one-step election that will probably attract scores of candidates, so the top vote-getter wins regardless of how few votes they earn.

Two questions on the ballot:

1. Do you vote to recall Gavin Newsom

2. Who do you vote for as governor

The only question that matters is #1.

After that, whoever wins the most votes out 130 or so candidates will be governor.

Actually, who cares? He’ll only be replaced by “more of the same”. California is a lost cause politically.

1. Highly unlikely that he will be recalled.

2. If on the off chance that he is, he’ll be replaced by someone ever worse.

Will they demand voter ID?

It’s not a presidential election. So people who will come to vote are more motivated to oust him. So I think he’s gone. But he might be replaced by a Democrat. That is okay. Gavin Newsom is being accountable for his actions. Even if the next Governor is a Democrat, there is always the recall so that would keep the future Democrat Governor “somewhat” accountable.

There are few that are worse.

This put a fire under our most wicked and evil politicians.

This has crippled his presidential aspirations.

This has forced him to relax some restrictions thus reducing human suffering.

This has absolutely been worth it

If you live in California and you vote Republican, make sure to tell EVERYBODY to vote by mail. Turn it against them!

The recall that might actually work is Chesa Boudin’s.

He only won very narrowly and has given plenty of reasons for people to change their mind.

The one that Trump endorses will win.

Yes there is a chance that the replacement could be as bad or almost as bad as Newsom. I am voting to recall Newsom because I want to punish him and end his political career forever. He has ruined so many lives and careers here in California that he deserves PUNISHMENT!!

I am in favor of the death penalty for murderers for the same reason. I don’t care about deterrence or sending a message. I want punishment for those who deserve it.

This could be the battle of the voter fraud.

The only question is whether the GOP is willing to stop playing by gentlemen’s rules and join the battle.

Polls are polls, I know. But I saw a headline that a majority are ok with him

We shall see. I’d love to see him gone and shamed.

Even better if somehow they squeak a Republican in there. One can hope.

Democrats, not a single one of them, have no shame. If he stays, he might keep his head low for a minute or two, after that he’ll go right back to the hypocrisy that put him in this place.

He’s too arrogant and will be emboldened

Like Cuomo, I think it’s best to keep seriously damaged Democrats in office. Fight like Bill Clinton and never give up.... should be their motto.

What if a Republican does wins, then on a plane back from DC, both US Senators die in an airplane wreck, and the Republican governor replaces them both with a conservative Republican.

Wow, talk about a game changer that would be.

Let me get off my finish riding under this rainbow on my trusty unicorn and then I’ll contemplate that scenario.

One can only dream.

But, if you think about it.....reverse the parties, PIAPS becomes the Governor, and the two Republican Senators are dead folks walking.

Go ahead and laugh, because you know it’s true.
