Crime is soaring in cities where police departments have been defunded, reports Fox News.
Movements to defund the police have grown since George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis. Defunding means reallocating or redirecting funding away from the police department to other government agencies funded by the local municipality.
More than 20 major cities have reduced their police budgets in some form, though the scale and circumstances vary.
The results have not fared well in Los Angeles, Oakland, New York City, Portland and Austin. Homicides in Oakland, California, have risen 314 percent compared with the same time last year and law enforcement has seen a 113 percent increase in firearms assaults.
Violent crime surged in 2020 in Minneapolis following Floyd’s death, and murders have risen by 46 percent between Dec. 11, 2020 through March 28 of this year, compared to the same period last year.
The Minneapolis City Council in December shifted approximately $8 million from the police department to other programs. In July, it diverted $1.1 million from the police department’s $193 million budget to the Office of Violence Prevention.
Murders have tripled from July 2020 to February 2021 in Portland, where city commissioners last May voted to cut nearly $16 million from the police budget in response to complaints about police force and racial injustice. Seventeen people have been murdered in Portland in the first two months of 2021, a 1,600 percent increase from the one murder reported during the same time period in 2020.

Would it be racist to report that?
Ithaca, NY just re-imagined its PD.
God help the law abiding.
Ithaca, NY, for those unfamiliar with the locale, is home to both Cornell University and Ithaca College.
City of Evil bump.
And liberals are too obtuse to get the connection. Sort of like FR’s liberTardians and dope.
Pretty sure this is all really caused by climate change. /s
Albany had to sign off on this. Cuomo and his party have some splainin to do.
Isn’t Oakland where Eric Swalwell, democrat congressman who was having an affair with a Chinese spy, and yet keeps his committeeship in the intelligence community, lives?
Speaking of pot, NYS just legalized it.
Folks should read the bill if they get a chance.
It’s a nightmare.
Unexpected.
By now, almost anyone could have made an almost one-to-one correlation between the degree to which police departments have been artificially handicapped, through defunding and micromanagement, and the soaring crime rates.
But if you have been conditioned all your life that the policemen are boogie men and inherently unfair, then this is just “getting even” with the system.
But there is no such thing as “getting even”. The imaginary “balance” is thrown violently from one end of the seesaw to the other.
Bet however many they hire will be far more happy to toe the party line than the officers they’re replacing.
There’s method to this madness.
It ends with the federalizing of all local, county, and state police.
It’s not really crime. It is just freedom.
Many are expressing directly their new freedom to distribute the wealth of others to them selves without the government middle man.
Must there be objection to freedom? /s
This what they want. Chocolate cities again. They like this. They want lower rents, less police, de gentrification and chaos. Thugs thrive in that kind of urban environment. Thugs win.
Man, woman and child all slashed in possible Manhattan hate crime
Check out the backround on the perp. And what's missing. Like a pic.
Jeez, the family was visiting from Belgium.
What could there plan possibly be in states like these. When crime rises the people are going to blame the government and administration. Like the border crisis. Why are they allowing this. So military can step in.
WHO in their right mind would even WANT to be a police officer these days?
The answer? Nobody!
