Not all of these ideas are without value. But none holds any serious prospect of averting future horrors. The proposals stem from the idea that the perpetrators of this kind of slaughter are weakly motivated and easily foiled. They rest on mistaken beliefs about the guns that are often used.
The term “assault weapon” is a triumph of marketing over function. These guns have no capabilities that ordinary ones lack. They are no more lethal than any number of semiautomatic firearms, and they don’t fire more rapidly. They can accommodate magazines holding 30 or more cartridges, but so can traditional rifles.
Banning them would be a fool’s errand. First, because some 16 million have already been sold, and no one is going to confiscate those. Second, because any attempt to define them allows manufacturers to produce modified versions that are no less deadly. The shooter who murdered 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 had an AR-15-style rifle designed to comply with Connecticut’s ban on assault weapons.
Third, because anyone bent on taking many lives can find innumerable alternatives. The shooter who killed eight people at spas in Georgia used a 9 mm pistol.

How about, no solution will prevent mass shootings?
perhaps instant justice, trial and hanging
or death by pigs, of the perp and his handlers
might work.
put the videos of pigs eating the perp online.
when the MSM starts with: “he was good boy, a very good boy”
pull their license and arrest the Holt and the others.
it would certainly work better than making
the serial killers alleged “heroes”; the MSM lying way.
Saying things that people don’t want to hear but needs to be said anyway.
That pretty much sums up his point.
In the overwhelming majority of mass shooting cases the perpetrator doesn't survive.
Oh, so we have another title for an article that does not match the the point being made by an author. Got it.
“The conservative notion that more armed citizens are the answer is equally flawed. Colorado allows adults to openly carry rifles and pistols without a permit. Only three states have more people with concealed-carry permits than Georgia. Neither fact was any help to those who were attacked.”
Paging John Lott. I am sure that this person’s comment about armed citizens is very flawed. I wonder why mass incidents have not yet taken place in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, the Dakotas, or Montana?
The way to prevent a thing is to attack the root cause. And GUNS are not the root cause. The shooters are. More accurately, whatever motivated them to do it is the root cause.
Kids used to bring rifles with them to school to shoot varmints on the way home for supper. Oddly, with all those guns around there were no school shootings.
The reason it is not getting resolved is twofold:
1. Focusing on guns does not help at all.
2. There are over 100,000 public schools in the US alone. These shootings are mind bogglingly rare. They are not the “death pandemic” many think they are.
The problem with an infomration age is that sometimes information can be missleading. e.g. If you watch a lot of youtube and Twitter videos you think:
1. Cops are shooting a LOT of unarmed and innocent black men. They are not. In fact, the numbers are going down. And they shoot more unarmed white men. And many of these “unarmed” men (of all races) were attacking cops or otherwise guilty of their own demise.
2. All violent crime is committed by black people. We even have a phrase here after a video is posted but before we see it: “So, the Amish are at it again.”
Honestly, when was the last time you saw a youtube video that showed white people committing any crime, or fighting in a mcdonalds, etc.? The result is that all of those videos are INCREASING racism on all sides. It can’t be helped. The only thing I personally know to do about it is conceal carry.
Some things will help.
Constitutional carry would start.
Execute murderers.
Open mental hospitals and use them.
Deport terrorists.
It only takes doing the math - how many guns are owned (legally) and by how many people versus the number of “mass shooting” incidents, to see the guns are not the problem. If mere gun ownership was the problem, there would be thousands of mass shootings every year. Owning a gun does not transform the owner into a mass killer.
Unable to get to any root problem, the unthinking Dims look for the most simplistic solution that will prey on ignorant sheeple and their “feelings” and sentiments.
The problem is psychological and individual.
And I must truthfully say we might ask why among “advanced” countries we seem to have so many deranged murderers. No, I am not putting the guilt that belongs on the shooter on the royal “we” (all of us). But that is not the same as saying that we shouldn’t try to figure it out (the problem), or even just identify/name it.
I know what the Left would say was THE solution. It would be their Utopia, where everyone was accepted and molded into a happy and uniform member of society, with no one feeling left out, inferior, unsatisfied, envious, depressed or any other unhappy and disturbed sentiments. And they would have you think that was why the Soviet Union had no such mass shooting incidents, ignoring all the while that the Soviets confiscated everyone’s weapons and sent all their malcontents to slave labor camps in Siberia.
Is it that in our Liberty we (friends, schoolmates, schools, family, relatives, police, courts, ect., ect.) don’t try to make the malcontents more content? Or isn’t that just another simplistic notion like banning guns?
An armed society is a polite society.
“The problem with an information age is that sometimes information can be misleading”
Your whole post hugely true. Too many people, with all their spare time, are immersed in media and our leaders know it.
It’s not a solution but one simple preventative action is to arm everyone. One common thread throughout mass shootings is that the predators intentionally picked defenseless targets.
Yes, there is a solution, it’s very easy. The solution is everyone is armed. You may lose a few, but the shooting is going to stop real quick!
Yep. And if they don't have guns, they'll use trucks or bombs like they do in Europe to commit mass killings.
Amen.
How about asking, “Why did they not happen 40 years ago and what have we changed in society since that time?”
Lock up the crazy people. Too many are on psychotropic drugs for issues they are having, until they either skip their doses or combine them with recreational drugs.
Also stop the revolving door on gangbanger crimes. Many of the “mass shooting” events are gang related.
