"Sorry but in era of modern technology, it is a floating coffin like all other surface combatants. Once located and tracted, it can destroyed with stealth missiles and even more deadly swarming stealth drones."

I agree. They are just targets for the growing China submarine force. That is what the US should be building, stealth subs by the dozens. We need more Tridents - so many that China/Norks/Russia would be encircled.

Plus, need more attack subs to support them. I forget what the latest attack sub designation is - Los Angeles?

As for transporting Marines, we could use more air carriers instead of putting them on those amphib ships. As submariners say, "surface ships are targets".

Big deck carriers are still needed to project air superiority. They have a huge escort group to protect them. I don't know what amphib ships have regarding escort nowadays. I do know in my time on LPH-11, we traveled without surface escorts, but sometimes a sub. We all knew if hit by a torpedo in the right spot, all 600 of ship's crew and 2000 Marines would be facing Davy Jones.

The last big deck amphib I was on that didn’t have a well deck was USS New Orleans, now razorblades.

"One surface to surface or air to surface missile will convert it to anchor capability."

Maybe, depending on where it hits. You're forgetting torpedoes. Hit the right spot and you can break the ship in half, as seen in the battle of Midway and other naval engagements.

Many battleships went down in the Pacific due to a singular torpedo directed amidship and just under the hull. That was the sweet spot so to speak. Hitting them just below the draft did damage, but the sweet spot is what sank them on both sides.

Yup, two in one year due to poor training, poor underway watch standing, and a pissing contest between the female OOD and the female CiC commander. None of that would have happened in my Navy, and I have sailed through that busy commercial strait.

I was on LPH-11 also in the late 70's as a flight deck Grape. Still remember the dry balogna sandwiches during O-dark-thirty flight ops while others were getting mid-rats from the mess deck below. I would do it all over again if my same Navy.

Push come to shove with the PLAN, they don’t have to lop missiles and planes at the Navy, nope. Just have a bunch of large container ships charge the fleet. And its ramming time!

“The America-class of amphibious assault ships, which includes the Tripoli, is designed to put a Marine Expeditionary Unit ashore using helicopters and the Marines’ vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft.”

May tbe F-35 quals be quick and painless. Amen.

Hope it works.

Looks like a huge target begging to be sunk.

How many escort ships does it need?

Might be good for a hostage situation against a Third World country.

One surface to surface or air to surface missile will convert it to anchor capability.

No it won't. True, it could damage it. It could knock it of commission but it would be repaired and returned to service. You know nothing about the Navy or damage control.

If you want to SINK a warship you have to inflict underwater hull damage. To do that a torpedo would have to be used. I would guess with all the WTD's shut it would take 6 or more torpedo top actually SINK the ship.

This is so funny, people act like these things are made of paper machete. I repeat myself:

Fixed it. Navy ships are designed to take damaged and to be repaired. The other services don't get that. Other services don't understand that "damage control" is a Navy religion..

No need to be concerned with damage control if you’re not going to stand up to or engage an enemy. If the meeting with the Chinese in Alaska is any indication (and I believe it is because they absolutely bitch slapped us with no consequences) I don’t see this administration confronting any serious adversary. Our ships may as well stay in port.
