Maine GOP Votes Against Censuring Sen. Susan Collins Over Trump Impeachment

The Maine Republican Party on Saturday rejected a motion that would have censured Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) over her vote to convict former President Donald Trump on an incitement of insurrection charge.

The party voted 19-41 on the motion.

“Party leadership considers this matter settled now and the team is moving on to preparing to win elections in 2022,” Jason Savage, the Maine GOP’s executive director, told CNN.

Collins in a statement said the decision “is a testament to the Party’s ‘big tent’ philosophy that respects different views but unites around core principles.”

“Our party has been most successful when it has embraced this approach to advance our shared goals of providing tax relief to families and small business job creators, pursuing fiscal responsibility and government accountability, promoting personal responsibility, protecting constitutional rights, and ensuring a strong national defense,” she added.

Collins was one of seven Republicans to vote to convict Trump last month, but he was acquitted because 43 GOP senators voted against conviction.

Five of the seven were censured in their home states. trump President Donald Trump arrives on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 24, 2017. (Samira Bouaou/The Epoch Times)

Collins had faced backlash from the Maine GOP after the vote.

The state party said in an open letter to Collins that the trial itself was unconstitutional because Trump was no longer in office and there were serious concerns with how House impeachment managers “altered video of President Trump to cast his speech in the worst possible light, ignoring his calls for peace, similar to the way a campaign might cut a dishonest 30-second campaign ad.”

Trump was charged by the House of Representatives with inciting an insurrection, primarily because he spoke near the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in the leadup to the breach of the building.

Critics pointed to phrases he uttered such as “fight like hell” to paint his words as incitement while supporters noted he urged the crowd to remain peaceful when they marched to the Capitol.

Trump later condemned the violence at the building and urged people to vacate the premises.

“We have not set a precedent that we fear will undermine the foundation of our country and could greatly diminish our status and integrity into the future,” the Maine GOP wrote last month.

Collins, 68, won re-election to her fifth term in 2020, defeating the Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon by about 70,000 votes.

Given the Maine GOP, they would send someone just as bad only male. This is an idiot GOP problem, not a 19th Amendment problem. :P

I agree with Collins statement meaning that I AGREE that RINO Republicans in Maine have as a “core principal” to stab an outstanding American and outstanding President in the back when the Marxist/Socialist’s Pelosi & Schumer get word to them to do it. I’m sure there was a trade like Maine will get a dam or a convention center or an Interstate Highway with lots of bribes merrily going out to all socialists back home in Maine.

Bush League Republicans are really just Democrats wearing R jerseys for camouflage.

Trump really has to stop endorsing them.

"providing tax relief to families and small business job creators, pursuing fiscal responsibility and government accountability, promoting personal responsibility, protecting constitutional rights, and ensuring a strong national defense

Which is exactly what Trump was doing until the Deepstate decided he was making them look bad and stole the election.

That money you give to the RNC?

It goes to the campaigns of Collins, Murkowski, Graham, Romney, Kinzinger, Upton, etc.

It is withheld from conservatives.

It goes to incumbents, not to challengers. Conservative incumbents do get money. If you want to challenge Republicans who are already in office you won’t get anything.

Funny - Maine GOP winning elections in 2022. The only way they win anything is if Paul LePage comes backs to run as Governor.

The northeast states' Republicans are not really Republicans.

They are more like democRATS who are not radical, falling-off-the-cliff, Leftist liberals.

They self-identify as Republicans because the rest of their democRAT party is so far left of them.

It is a shame that a beautiful state like Maine has so many dumb-assed people.

Incumbents only?
Not so.

The RNC WOULD NOT GIVE A DIME TO CONSERVATIVES RUNNING AGAINST DEMOCRAT INCUMBENTS, like Stewart in Virginia and many others.

Maine GOP may swing one way, but voters will have the final say. Let us wait to see if they reject her next election!

“Maine GOP may swing one way, but voters will have the final say. Let us wait to see if they reject her next election!”

When Collins is gone, her seat will go to a labeled Democrat and will remain blue.
