With a 50-50 split in the United States Senate, there are two things Joe Biden cannot afford: Democrat defections and a filibuster. Senate rules require 60 votes for cloture to move on legislation, and recent years have turned the filibuster into an obstruction tactic by the minority party.
Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from the very red state of West Virginia, has found himself in a very powerful position. His support or opposition to key legislation could make or break Joe Biden’s agenda in Congress.
So, it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow at the fact that Joe Biden has nominated Gayle Conelly Manchin, Senator Joe Manchin’s wife, to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission, which is an economic development partnership with 13 states designed “to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia.” The position requires Senate confirmation.
This nomination comes at a time when Manchin has publicly expressed opposition to extreme gun control, a $15 minimum wage, and eliminating the filibuster.
So, what exactly is Biden up to?
It is not unprecedented for the spouse of a member of Congress to serve in an executive branch position. For example, Senator Mitch McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao served as transportation secretary under President Trump and labor secretary under President George W. Bush.
But it’s hard to ignore the special circumstances surrounding Mrs. Manchin’s nomination that suggests, regardless of her qualifications, an ulterior motive by Joe Biden, or whoever it is making his decisions for him.

Amongst the hillbillies, yes, however, just like Maryland, the WV liberals congregated in the bigger cities overrun the conservative voters in the hills.
Morgantown, Charleston, Martinsburg, they all are lib infested.
All I got for it was this t-shirt with knife holes in the back from George "Mute Boy" Bush, Juan McLame, Mitt The Zitt, Paul "Eddie Munster" Ryan and Pelosi's bMitch McConnell.
And the blood.
The Republican jobworths can burn in hell while we conservatives figure out how to extricate ourselves from the senile puppet-boy's rigged socialist state.
Ha. Maybe then they will not vote for RINOs. Better to stay ho,e.
Your pain is my joy.. No more RINOs.
“Your pain is my joy.. No more RINOs.”
No pain for me, I spent the day moving out of my house, and soon the country.
Enjoy Venezuela.
“All I got for it was this t-shirt with knife holes in the back from George “Mute Boy” Bush, Juan McLame, Mitt The Zitt, Paul “Eddie Munster” Ryan and Pelosi’s bMitch McConnell.”
...and we also got Trump. But I guess it was also worth throwing Trump overboard too, just to get rid of the Georgia RINOs (after all, Trump went to Georgia twice to tell our side not to give up...oh well, we didn’t listen, we lose now)
Your last word looks like a QWERTY typo—but it could also be a work of genius or inspired. I can’t make up my mind
Makes me think of Frank Skeffington appointing Norman Cass’ idiot son as fire commissioner to extort a loan from his bank.
He doesn’t matter as long as Chairman Joseph Xiden has cassidy, collins, murkowski, romney, and sasse to do his bidding.
With his record, it's unlikely that Joe Manchin can ever again get reelected in West Virginia. The issue is, does he know this? Is he planning accordingly? Will he use the next 3 years cashing in from betraying his constituents? Is his wife's no show, no work patronage job, paying $180,000 a year, only the tip of the iceberg?
And yet more than 68% of WV voted for Trump.
Manchin’s election was due to a combination of family name and a weak GOP candidate.
I suspect the salary is just pocket money.
The real benefit is the grift she can slurp off the funding sent to “help Appalachia”.
okay if they need 60 votes to do cloture on the filibuster vote what good would it do tho get Manchin on board you still only have 51 votes!!
Voting for Perot was a ‘gimme’ for Clinton. Why?!
Fleeing instead of standing and fighting?
I seem to have lost count of your opuses.
Or more than that.
Where I come from, we call this “BRIBERY”. Time for DOJ and/or the Fed. Election Commission to investigate this as a case of bribery on the part of the Democrat Party and perhaps the White House.
He is either a hero or a zero.
