CAIRO - A giant container ship remained wedged sideways in the Suez Canal on Friday as signs of its potentially huge global economic toll emerged with shipping rates rising and cargo ships being rerouted away from the vital waterway.
The Ever Given, a Panama-flagged vessel whose length is nearly the height of the Empire State Building, has been stuck in the canal since Tuesday, creating a massive traffic jam on both sides of the waterway that connects Asia to Europe.
On Friday morning, the canal’s service provider, Leth Agencies, said in a tweet that the Ever Given “remains grounded in the same position” with tugboats and dredgers working to “refloat” the vessel, which is blocking the flow of an estimated $12 billion in goods.
With some experts predicting that freeing the ship could take weeks, some global shipping companies on Friday began seeking alternative routes for their cargo.
At least seven tankers carrying liquefied natural gas were diverted, including three steered toward the longer route to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa. Another nine more tankers are expected to be diverted if the blockage continues into the weekend, an analyst for data intelligence firm Kpler told the Guardian newspaper.
At least four long range oil tankers with the capacity to haul 75,000 tons of oil are also possibly headed around the Cape of Good Hope, London-based ship brokering firm, Braemar ACM told Reuters, adding that shipping rates have nearly doubled this week “as the market starts to price in fewer vessels being available in the region.”

fkn pu$$ys
Cut their losses and blow the stuck ship up with explosives. Clear the debris and get the backup moving again.
Get a crane on both sides of the canal and start off loading the cargo on to shore and or to empty barges enough to lighten the load and raise the ship up.
Haa! Red Adair would be proud of us,haa!!
Love the Harbor Freight shout out!!!
That’s one YUGE tube.
The cargo ship is the size of the Empire State Building.
What percent of the stuck ship would need the tube?
It's only a matter of time before some Marxist talking head on CNN or MSNBC comes out and blames Trump.
I did not realize that portions of the front and back of this vessel have bottomed out. I do know they make huge airbags which have been used in the past to raise sunken ships, how about attaching some on either side with slings going through under the vessel in places where there is still some clearance underneath. This should compensate for some of the freight on top and then start pulling again. Or try to get a vessel in capable of doing some excavating right in front of the bow where it should be going. Well just a thought....hmmmm
Yep.
Empty the ship
Blow it up
Clear the channel.
As far as the owners and cargo - tough.
Let them deal with it.
This was clearly contrived.
I heard on the internet than normal speed in that stretch is 8 knts. They were doing 13 to compensate for the sail effect. Lucky it’s just a big muddy ditch bank they rammed. Some are concerned about stress on the ships hull. The whole thing may bust apart if they pull the wrong way.
Reminds me of the cruise ship that ran aground offshore, in Italy. They did manage to right it, sail away, and sell it for scrap.

All those liberals of the northeast will certainly get their underwear in a wad when their home heating oil goes past $4 and $5 bucks a gallon next winter. Hopefully their butts will get frosty as they blame Trump for the high prices.
Could be!
I used to sail with my Dad, a Navy Man, so those nautical terms are BURNED into my brain. When you came aboard the, ‘Ms. B. Haven’ all land-used words ceased to exist. ;)
Our dog Ginger went along; we had many ‘Dog Overboard’ drills. She’d just calmly dog-paddle in place and wait for us to come around and pick her up, LOL! She was one tough mutt!
To this day, I still take ‘Navy Showers.’ Water on, get wet. Water off. Soap up. Water on. Rinse off. Done! ;)
Boat traffic is backed up worse than a toilet at the ‘No-Tell Motel!’ ;)
What?! No duct tape?! Fail.
The old way:
Raise the water level.
Steel Dams - above and below (canal locations).
Add water in to this temp. dry/wet dock, floating the ship.
Align ship with the more logistics-capable shore. Release water level.
Remove Steel Dams.
Does that mean that there's some other way of taking a shower? News to me.
LOL! Not if you were raised Navy! ;)
