Virginia took a historic step on Wednesday by becoming the first state in the South to eliminate the death penalty.
Gov. Ralph Northam signed the legislation a month after the Virginia General Assembly voted to strike down capital punishment in the state.
Virginia became the 23rd state in the country to get rid of the death penalty. Additionally, there are three states - Oregon, California, and Pennsylvania - where a governor-issued moratorium on executions is in effect.

Democrats will run with the issue and leave us holding the body. Support for capital punishment is a mile wide and an inch deep. It should not be subject to political winds. The problem is life imprisonment without parole-no such thing.

This is akin to announcing to all would-be murderers that the lives of the people residing in our jurisdiction are no longer worth protecting.

This is so stupid. The threat of the death penalty is often used to get a criminal to choose life without parole rather than face the possibility of being sentenced to death.

People who commit heinous are shown mercy. The innocent unborn are slaughtered. Not the sign of a civilized country.
Now family members must administer the death penalty themselves.
What makes you think they want them to take life w/o parole instead of a lighter sentence?
IF DC becomes a state, let them take the DC/Virginia suburbs with them. At least conservatives will get Virginia back.
After what we’ve seen from the DOJ/FBI over the last five years, I can’t understand for the life of me how any conservative would even have any confidence in the State’s power to arrest people — let alone execute them.
Calling Virginia a southern state anymore is a joke.
Thanks to the overwhelming number of government employees and contractors in Virginia, the state has flipped permanently blue.
